As Hayate sweated profusely, the young Terumi almost became worried about his teacher’s condition. However the unnatural amount of water exuding from the lad was quickly explained as it became a sheet of water coating the ninja, then slipping away from him on both sides and creating identical clones of the chunnin. While it might seem like a regular or basic technique, for the young genin the technique was wondrous and brought up so many possibilities! But, as Hayate announced the youth as number one, he noticed the clone in front of him kept his hands locked in a seal, while his companion’s fell into a battle stance. The objective appeared to be simple: land a strike on the Hayate. Hayate Number One was just as stoic as Hayate himself, and the young Terumi’s brain raced for possibilities. How would he be able to land a strike on one so experienced as a chunnin?

Terumi let his left foot stand as it was, facing the Hayate One clone, while he slowly dragged his right foot backwards at an angle, spreading apart his legs and lowering his stance and center of gravity with it. He slid his right hand into the inside of his jacket, while his left hand was an open palm with stretched fingers, a barrier he aimed at the clone. Taking off a smoke bomb off his jacket, he let it drop below him, where it expelled vast amounts of smoke to cover a ten meter radius relatively fast. As soon as the smoke enveloped him, and using the noise from the smoke dispersing to his advantage, Kazushi lowered himself to the floor as fast as he could and burrowed into the floor, quickly digging underground, and travelled to where he knew Hayate was standing, his sensory ability heightened to be able to sense what was happening above the ground. If Hayate One didn’t move, he would simply slip his hands behind his heels and pull Hayate One down by the bottom of his calves where the calf connects to the foot. Having him down, he would move his hand as fast as he could to land a blow on the underground Hayate One before he could move away.

Tsubasa watched the action below him with great interest, as the chunin formed two water clones that the two genin would be facing off against. Tsubasa decided that he'd remain a spectator for a while longer as the chances of this situation becoming immensely entertaining had just increased so dramatically. Watching this sparring match would provide him with everything he had come for; he'd be able to not only get an idea of the strength of Hayate, but also get to see the two weaker shinobi get their asses handed to them without even lifting a finger to contribute. 

Lying down on the thickest limb of the entire tree, which had plenty of room and size to support his weight comfortably as he observed the events below him. Tsubasa's eyes were trained on the actions of all 5 of the individuals careful to keep in mind which Hayate was the original.

Two/Rajiasu attempted the same stance as the clone in front of him. Not an awful choice. Hayate mused as he watched from behind the clones. Mirroring your opponent gave away no information of your own, and theoretically gave you the same advantages and disadvantages they had. That is, if you could mirror them.

The bigger body of Rajiasu trembled trying to hold the position, it clearly wasn't a style he was trained it. It was further contrasted by the stone still stance of the clone in front of him.

Time ticked on.

Meanwhile, 1/Kazushi took a moment to consider before slipping into his own combat stance, a little more sure of himself. As soon as the smoke bomb obscured 1/Kazushi the corners of Hayates mouth lifted ever so slightly into a smirk. He had called it, and sent the right clone after the right person. The serious kid whose clothes and attitude mirror the stereotypical Kiri measured his opponent, and attempted to gain an advantage and hopefully use a trick or surprise to even things out. Also not a bad plan.

But that clone, hands already in the tiger seal, quickly began performing more seals. Boar, Ox, Dog, Snake, they blurred by. He was confident in his ability to form the 4 seals faster than any attack could close the distance.

And then the clone stood still again.

The attack didn't come from the cloud of smoke, but from shifting sands below his feet. The Terumi reached up, grabbed an ankle and pulled ... and the branch from the tree that stood behind Hayate came underground, instead of any foot.

Substitution jutsu complete, the clone appeared back in the direction the genin had came from, in the middle of the smoke cloud. It called out "underground" before backing directly away from the genin's attack spot, walking halfway up the stone wall encircling the training ground, chakra sticking him firmly to the stone.

Just under 20 meters away, Hayate himself hopped up to a sturdy branch on the tree, now aware of the underground genin, to get a better view.

When it was clear the hayate clone in front of 2/Rajiasu wasn't going to make the first move, Rajiasu settled back into a more comfortable stance for himself for a second while smoke started to billowed not to far away ... before charging. It seems this clone being in the combat stance was also a good choice.

The sudden ferocity of a larger person backed up his initial impression, that normal people would be scared of him and his tactics - but combatants less so. The clones forward hand, the one once face up, kep its place but rotated to now have the palm face Rajiasu. But this was just to keep attention on it, the closest threat that was moving, which was unknowingly helped by it being the genin's first target. While he did this, the chuunin clone dropped his body low and forward into a sliding kick. The rear clenched first instead opened to press against the ground and support his body weight while his feet kicked forward, entire body sliding almost flat against the ground. He pulled the kick, stopping just barely an inch shy of the genin's rapidly moving ankle and letting him run into it instead of risking damaging the weak spot. (clone speed 62.5)

As other clone was replaced by a branch and called out, this clone would push off the ground, getting out of the way of the Rajiasu's momentum, so that Rajiasu, if tripped, would land in between the clone and the smoke. He'd take a few steps back, and resume his original stance.

Rajiasu expected to lose the fight, but it was over almost as soon as it had begun. Embarrassingly fast. He didn't know what hit him. He remembered an impact from below, and then he was tumbling forward, arms flailing wildly, as he swayed forward and then ate dirt.

"Bleh."

He spat out some soil. It tasted... earthy. And yucky. Most likely, he'd be tasting this many times before the end of the day. Oh well. The point was to be defeated now, so someone else wouldn't, later. Admitting such an obvious fact seemed pointless to the big lad.

Presumably uninterrupted, he slowly got to his feet. He surveyed the scene, looking for the target. There was clouds of smoke over yonder, that wasn't the likely clone. Turning around, his opponent clone came into view, back in the first stance.

Hmmmm....

He charged again. Not because he hoped to take the teacher's clone by surprise, but because clearly he was meant to initiate. Better than being chased around the ring. As he approached within striking distance, his right foot shot out in a ghastly looking sweep, his intent to take the opponent's footing out in one stroke. His right hand would shoot out forward, at first looking to grab the opponent's wrist, but instead reaching past and attempting to grab the upper arm instead.

If allowed, he would attempt to both do a leg sweep and pull the clone over (yanking on the upper arm). He could safely expect to be countered though, and his left arm was attempting to sneak towards the clone's torso from the side, aiming to do a totally amateur throw. Of what kind, even Rajiasu wasn't sure. But he had to try something.

This training session may yet prove to be useful, yet at the same time Kazushi felt he was out of his element. Just a moment ago he was feeling well and energized, yet now something deep within him felt disturbed, as if he had forgotten something and his perception kept getting drawn away from the present moment. He watched as one of Hayate's clone observed him, and how a new figure drew upon them. He would observe the fight for a while longer, intrigued as to why he felt suddenly so exhausted, bereft of any willingness to participate in the spectacle, as though the exercise was not one in combat prowess, but in futility.

Kazushi stood on the tree, perpendicular to the trunk and parallel to the ground, his blue coat dangling towards the grass below as sure as the blue sky stretches to the horizon. A longer sect of his hair lazed towards the ground as well, much like the long cloth that dangled from his knotted sash across his forehead, usually meant to absorb sweat and prevent sweat from running down his eyes, now twice as cold as it would usually be. His blue eyes gazed at the training ground with a certain boredom within them, a sense of dread creeping about coming from what he perceived as the uselessness of the situation.

Perhaps he was feeling ill? Who knew. But he couldn't keep up anymore. He flickered away from the scene, and after making sure he wasn't followed, he left.

Once home, he would get off his clothes and under a warm shower. Anything to help him wash away the cold creeping feeling he felt within. He warmed up some soup his neighbour would drop by him to make sure he was feeding properly; even though he didn't know her directly, the old lady helped him out. He felt a lot of sympathy for her, even though he also felt entitled to the special treatment; he was, after all, the old blood of the Kirigakure. Afterwards, he went to sleep under thick blankets; before long he was warm and comfortable under his cocoon, and sleep came easy.
