Now, it was time for Kozai to begin to work toward discovering his final element. After all, he had only discovered his first two. He wondered if he could work toward doton as a third element. After all, it would be extremely interesting to see how it would react to the DNA that he had stored away in his lab. After all, he had already explored the potential of that wood release that he had researched. The boy that he had killed in front of the gates had yielded quite the plethora of knowledge. Now that there was a new leader in town, Kozai wondered if he should go check out the new leadership... but decided against it. He needed time to get updated from his cryo sleep. His body was just beginning to get back into shape, so he needed more time. Now, how to best go about developing doton? Well, he coudln't just go about it the same way that he had developed hyouton; that seemed easier now. All he had had to do then was fuse two elements. Now, he had to focus on developing a third separate one. This would be an even greater challenge (perhaps) than many others he had already faced. He waddled his way into Youka's lab, and thought about things for a bit.
However, now he picked up something on Youka's table. Hmm... this was interesting. It gave him a new idea. Perhaps he would have to delay achieving this "plant release" after all. This was a much more practical thing. Chakra draining... Kozai had wanted to achieve something like this for a while. Very well, his reasearch topic had been decided for the day, but not specifically. Chakra drain was something that people didn't use very often, in Kozai's experience, at least. However, the fact that he was a mainly suiton user was something that he prided himself on. Uniqueness, it was, in this case. Even Arcanis and Agito were second-rate water users compared to him (oh dear, he was starting to sound like the old leader). Well then, he would have to make it so his water jutsu drained chakra. This, in turn... oh, dear... he suddenly smiled. This would make him a much more effective combatant than he had ever been. Not just an academic now.... Kozai smiled and set to work. He channeled his suiton... ugh, so pure. This suiton was merely water itself, or rather, the ability to direct water. It didn't have enough malignancy. Or, rather, not enough resources to make it practical.
So... what about adding some of that nasty medical chakra that he had dabbled in before? Chakra that defied a doctor's oath, chakra meant to harm rather than heal... or rather do both; harm the patient, heal the doctor. Yes... that was a potential solution. Kozai quickly made up a solution, then infused his chakra into it. Then, he channeled his suiton chakra into the water, pushing it a little. This was added with some of his more medically aligned chakra, creating a darker force. Hmm... that wasn't quite it. Well, why? The academic in him pushed at his mind. Why wasn't he gaining more chakra? Well, first, one had to figure out the problem. He did a reading on the solution, and raised his eyebrows. What....? The reading had gone down. Kozai blinked. How was that possible? He hadn't gained anything from it at all. He re-did the process, this time taking careful notes on the process. First, the solution with water that he planned to use. Then, the solution itself would be infused with his own modified suiton cha- wait... that was it! He decanted the solution. The chakra itself had been taken from the solution... then evaporated?
Ah, so now everything made sense. The chakra had indeed been absorbed... just not placed inside his own body. It was all clear now, what the problem was, but not the solution itself (pun yes). He could not readily retrieve that chakra, now could he? No, it would be too much effort, and in the end, not worth it. He sat down and took out a piece of note paper. On top of it, he wrote "chakra 'thermodynamics' in such and such a solution". Frowning, he rubbed his chin. He had shaved recently, huh. Kozai hadn't noticed. He supposed that around company such that he had now, he would keep better appearances. Leave it to his subconcious to care for his forgotten wants and needs. Kozai reflected not so fondly on his younger days.... Avarice was part of him now, and was nothing to worry about. He had full control of who his was, as befitted a scientist and a shinobi. Those who didn't... were they even fit to be ninja? "Know thyself", the ancients had said (although 400 years ago was not THAT old, now was it). People who didn't were most likely going to be turned into red mist by people who did, like Echo.
Now, back to business. Kozai had spent enough time on rememberance and such, perhaps too much time. He felt that, with Youka and Maku, he was on a limited timespan. He drew a diagram of the beaker, and the solution inside. He labeled them as such, then labeled the chakra as it flowed into the container. Now.... he drew the chakra as it was extracted by the wave of energy sent afterwards. Then, he drew an arrow straight up from the beaker to the air, labeling it "evaporation? loss?" to signify the potential direction the chakra had gone. Well, he wasn't certain about that, but it would do for the time being.
He mulled a bit, then smiled. Ah, so he needed some kind of net to trap the chakra. However, it would have to be something that was provided with the energy wave, otherwise it would be impractical in combat. A two step process was not good, when a person had to make quick decisions and actions. So... what would do the trick? Perhaps chakra would do; it often did. Kozai drew out his course of action on the sheet of paper, and got up, dusting off his lab coat.
He made up another solution. Yes, he would have to do this each time. He would make a point to apologize to Youka later about the waste of resources. He was a little bit concerned that Youka would be angry, but then again, what could possibly go wrong? The worst was death and torture, and Kozai was concerned about neither. Well, in that case, the worst would be that Youka would destroy his brain and leave him a mindless idiot for eternity. Now that... was truly an undesirable outcome. He repeated the process, putting chakra into the container then swirling it around for a bit before thrusting the chakra net and the energy chakra wave in. It... didn't work. Well, as unexpected as it was, Kozai dealt with losses such as these fairly well. After all, he merely negated the hypothesis and continued with his labor of love. He was feeling a little tired now, but that didn't stop him. He thought about all the aspects of "nets" and such materials that they could be made out of. Hmm... it didn't have to be net-shaped, just to the point where it would transmit that chakra to him, that was all that mattered.
Well, there was a solution here. Chakra was one side of things, while cells, tissue, was another. Perhaps if he used his own cells along with it... But how? Well, there was one solution. Kozai went back to the drawing board, or rather, the piece of note paper. He drew cells inside the diagram of his chakra system. Why, this could be it! His cells could interact with his chakra, like they had been for the past ten or so years of his somewhat uneventful life. Why, if the solution was this easy, then he had been made a fool of by suiton itself this whole time. He channeled suiton into a newly made solution (of course), and this time, when he released energy into the mix, he added... a bit of himself. Almost immediately, he felt the chakra flood back into him. Yes! That was it! He had found it at last. Now, he needed to test one more thing: the limits of this. There had to be, of course, nothing was limitless, as far as he knew. Even Near's pride had a point where it stopped (with his death, hehehe), so too, must this new sort of ability.
He then set up a specific number of beakers, four of them, to be exact, and infused into each of them an amount of chakra that corresponded to a certain jutsu. For the first beaker, an amount of chakra was infused equal to that expended per unit of time in a surface walking jutsu. For the second beaker, an amount of chakra was infused equal to that expended upon use of the body flicker jutsu. For the third beaker, an amount of chakra was infused equal to that used per unit of time by his marvelous masterpiece, kega kyohi, the damage rejection jutsu. And at last, the last one he put a little more than what he would normally use for his ice mirror jutsu. He would then proceed to absorb chakra from all of these, testing his own boundaries. As mentioned before, he wanted to know what and how much he could do before everything just stopped. He moved as quickly as he could while he still had time, lest something unknown, something feared caught up to him. Was he really afraid of the loss of time? Something pushed him, drove him... and he had yet to find out what it was. How annoying.
Well, from the first beaker, he was able to draw out all the chakra. Not surprising at all. The second, and third followed suit, but the fourth... he wasn't able to absorb quite all the chakra back. Well, that wasn't surprising at all. He knew there had to be a limit, and at that level, it made sense for it to be there. Now, time to re-do everything. He re-started from the beginning, then finished with the four beakers with the exact same results. Well, that was most certainly encouraging. He was finally ready to record his results, he thought.
He cleaned up, putting all the beakers into the sink and washing them appropriately, then drying them and placing all of them up onto their racks. Kozai was a more well-organized scientist, something else in which he prided himself immensely. Not many could keep up a facility like this as well as he... well, those doctors in Ame could teach him a thing or two. They had such advanced technology... things that would make him drool just a little.
Results:
"Apparently, by forcing my suiton chakra to adhere to a different chakra source, then by drawing it into my body, I am able to replicate to create a unique chakra draining effect. Should this technique need use in the field, I will record those results as well. Now, as to the technique itself, it appears that a small amount of tissue is necessary for creating such an effect. The implications of this are far from small, but I must work with what I have. In the end, this could prove useful." With that, Kozai went back to the chair. He draped his coat over its back and sat down, relaxing his muscles. It had been a tiring but most interesting day. It wasn't often anymore that Kozai developed something new for himself (then again, who would he develop something for, other than himself? What a foolish question to ask of himself). He was a little excited, and very curious as to how this would develop in the future. But for now, he let dreams take him to sleep....
