Merlin had been chosen to escort some guests into the village but he would need to meet them a distance away from the village out on the borders of the country. So he headed to the gates to be let out and make his journey to the designated place.

Rather than Akimitsu at the gates, as was standard, Chiharu himself had taken the guard shift that would take place at the arrival of their guests. Nodding to Merlin as he approached, Chiharu stood to meet the much taller man. ”Be careful, please. If he attacks, run, I’ll do my best to intercept. If not, I’ve been instructed to inform you not to let the representative into your personal space and be respectful. Also, keep your wits about you. Good luck.” he murmured, and then indicated that the man was free to leave the gates. Without many strong shinobi that weren’t already assigned to someone else, he’d had to choose Merlin. Hopefully, his faith in the genin wouldn’t be misplaced.
