C-Rank Mission: Do You Wanna Build a Chunin? Empty C-Rank Mission: Do You Wanna Build a Chunin?

Mission Log:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kari was finally out of the hospital. Her ankle healed well, though the wait in line to be check out and to be given permission to remove the brace was a waste of time. Since the girl has been walking without pain for a while, she wanted freedom to further her training. Lucky for her, she could work at the hospital with the brace. However, she was limited in her ninja training since she was not allowed to run. At the very least, the payout for firefighting was great and her injuries, though minor, did not cost her money. So everything financially, it was a victory. The problem now was what to do with the money. Since she did not have to pay for the injuries and none of her puppets were damaged, she decided to save the rewards for when she could remove the brace. That way, if something came up she could offset the charge. Since she made it this far without incurring such a charge, the girl decided to get something she thought she deserved. For today, a certain shop was reopening and she wanted to be there on the opening day. Especially since, they were having an opening day discount.

Kari went into her closet and took out a plum color vest with a high collar, a sky blue t-shirt, and dark blue shorts. This outfit did not have a star symbol on it, but the girl had a special sticker that would allow her to slap a star on the sleeve of her T-shirt should she be required to act her formal duties as a kunoichi. That was not going to happen, since she had yet to report the results. That gave her time to enjoy this opening day. So bring that sticker was just a habit of trying to be overly prepared. Good things favor those who are prepared, as her father would say. With that, she was ready to venture out. She moved to her bathroom and looked over her hair. It was in her pigtails but that was too iconic for her. If another ninja saw her, they would be able to learn of her ankle's recovery and could report that. Therefore, she decides to change her own hairstyle. Though she had no way of changing her hair color without going shopping for something like color dye or using chakra for the transformation jutsu, she knew she always used one of 3 styles. Those styles were ponytail for water events, letting her hair fall below her shoulders for when she did not want a style, and her infamous pigtails. Some say her pigtails were a little childish but Kari felt her pigtails gave her personality despite her lack of one. So this time, she would braid it into two long braids that fell down to her shoulders. One could say it was similar to her pigtails, but unlike her pigtails, this braid used all of her hair. Well, most of it would be a better description since she could not braid it to the roots. Still, it was different enough, though not as refine as a professional. With that little factor at of the way, the girl was off to get lunch.

"1 Bento Box... umm chicken please," Kari stood in front of about 10 people. Despite her efforts, she arrived to a 20 minute long line. It was great that the place had a strong community support, but now it was just too noisy. The girl would be force to take to food home if she wanted some peace and quiet.
"To go please," Kari added quietly before the chief started the order. With a simple nodded, the chief went to work quickly creating the simple dish. With fried shrimp, vegetables like broccoli and squash, neatly cut chicken, a plastic container for teriyaki sauce, seaweed salad, and some shrimp temporal rolls, the bento box was done. It had a cheap price, much cheaper than all the other boxes though it was not her favorite. If she had to choose a meat, then she would pick the more expensive beef. However, Kari was still saving up so she went light. About a couple minutes later, the chief was holding out a plastic bag with a warm black box inside. Her food mission was complete. Now all she had to do was make it home.

However, her luck would end here as a genin ran up to her as she left the sushi bar. This was not just any genin; it was the same one that called her in for the girl's fire fighting duties. How did he find her? Kari sighed. She did need the boy to call her out. Still, she remained quiet. Who knows, maybe he was just going to the same store as her.
"Tsukami-san, the mission secretaries request your presences," The boy stopped and panted for a few seconds before continuing with a personal comment of his, "Oh they allowed you to remove your brace?"
Despite the girl multiple theories and reasons for being called, she could not blame them knowing her injury was fixed as one. This also meant that whatever activity they needed Kari for; it did not require her to be physically active. That was unless they wanted her expertise as a puppeteer. There were too many variables to make a clear prediction so Kari would just have to see. With her lunch cradled in her hands, she followed the genin.

"Kari, I hear that you have been released from your light limited duty, no?" the male secretary announced.
Kari stood in the middle of the room, with her lunch in her arms. Due to the urgency the genin presented the situation as, the girl did not have time to change into a more mission appropriate outfit or even put away her lunch.
"Yes, I was going to report back but," the man raised his hand signaling the girl to stop talking. His expression, that being uninterested in anything other than the scroll unrolled before him, did not change from the moment she entered the room. It was a much better expression than what she imagined him to have.
"We are well aware of your situation today. Normally we do like to give our ninjas a few days to get use to their unrestricted freedom after medical issue. Today however, we need a different type of skill. See we received reports that a group of the church has been picking a fight with a group chunin team and their genin. After multiple unreported incidents, the two have decided to meet up Water Gardens to handle their issues once and for all."

Kari raised her head while putting her finger on her free hand into her mouth. She was no stranger to the idea of being hated by the church. In fact, she was disliked by many people in her short history due to being different. Become a ninja only made that list bigger. However, the idea of coming together and solving a problem seemed like the correct solution. It is what she would do. She would identify why people do not like her and correct the deficiency. Then hopefully, people would grow a change of heart. However, if it was that easy then she would not be called in. Still, she would bring up the point.
"Is this not what we want? I found talking things out to be effective against most non-violent problems."
The female secretary decided to answer Kari's question, "Yes, we would agree. However, reports have come in showing both sides will be fully armed when they arrived at the water garden. While we do not think our ninjas are in danger, any confrontation that ends in a civilian getting hurt will bury the shinobi name into the ground. Do you understand?"
Kari nodded. This situation was weird, but the rough idea of the mission was comprehensible. She needed the two deescalate without anyone getting hurt.
" You want me to de-escalate the situation?" Kari took a stab at what the mission would be, not that she was not given enough clues.
"Yes, this will be a C rank mission and you will be rewarded as such," The female secretary put down the scroll and smiled.
" I accept!" Kari stated. Another C rank payout would be a great reward. However, this was another social mission. It would be difficult but hopefully she would not have to be too social. They seek her out to do this, so they had to think she had the right skills for the mission.
" Great, you they will be meeting in 3 minutes. If you run there now, you should make it before anything serious happens."
"Wait wait?"

Kari found herself sprinting with her bento box in her chest to the water garden. If she still had her brace, then she would have missed the event by over 10 minutes, but since she was free to run, she managed to get there just in time to hear the yelling. It was a female voice; one Kari did not recognize the voice. She did recognize the flak jacket as a chunin jacket. This meant the woman was chunin, the only chunin on the field. Behind her were 2 female genin and 3 male genin. They all had kunai as weapons and they had standard genin outfit, as standard a genin can be. The girls all wore some sort of pseudo cloak long sleeve shirt with sleeves that draped pass their hands. This gives them the option of hiding their hands while giving their hands and arms freedom to slide things in and out of their clothes. It was the reason Kari wore cloak, well one of them. They all wore dull colors white and brown for the female genin and blue for the female chunin. When she looked at the 3 male genin, they opted for open jackets with hidden pockets inside. The jackets were all back but the shirts underneath were black, green, and red. They all wore their headbands on their foreheads making them very traditional. Honestly, it was the first time outside of the academy that Kari saw so many ninja uniformed. Everyone always added their own spin to their outfits. It was law of the ninja world. You needed to be iconic enough. Still every ninja here was a snowflake compared to the church group.

The church group at least doubled the ninja squad. Kari stopped counting after she reached 10. All of them both men and woman, had some sort of object in their hand ranging from kunai to pitch forks to even swords. However, you could tell by the way they held their weapons that most of them were not trained in fighting. Even if they were, they would be no match for people like Xuba or Cole who were both genin. Kari could only imagine what a chunin could do and if the genin had even half the power of the two prior mentioned genin, this church group was going to march to their death. Despite having weapons out, the church group was not dressed for combat. All of them wore robes of black with red highlights color the outline of their outfit. It was very stylist and unique compared to the more conservative colors Kari normally saw on people of faith. Most certainly, this was a minority group. The person in front of them all, a much older woman only held a book. Kari could only presume it to be the writings of their faith, a bible of sort. Since she was the only one not to have a weapon, Kari would presume she was the leader. This was good knowledge as now Kari only had to focus on two people. If the chunin and this lead priest, as Kari would dub her, would back down then the rest should surly follow. The problem now was how to intervene.

Kari watched as the two groups bickered with each other under the commanding voices of the chunin and the lead priest. The argument seemed to focus around not wanting or needing ninja in the village. Some of the points were the trouble ninjas would cause and how ninjas could not be trusted. They were dangerous creatures who used demonic energy and were forsaken by God. Kari could not deny that fact that some ninja were dangerous. Some did cause problems as with Cole and his stealing or Xuba and his feat. However, Kari has seen normal people cause problems to include how others outcast her for being different, how the church who once helped her find refuge shunned her after she got her star, and even how the people would throw stones at her when she was trying to save life's and put out a fire. Both groups had their demons but a few demons samples should not label the pool. Her only blessing in this was that the ninja did not sling slanderous words at the priest. However, that only limited how much Kari could pull from her own experience. After all, Kari understood that revealing she was a ninja who make her appear bias and limit the chances for success. Thus, she had to do her best as a normal person.

Kari set down her bento box on a nearby stone. Kari did not want to risk her lunch being destroyed by some crossfire. Though her reward was getting cold, it was at least safe from the conflict. The girl walked between the two groups. Her presences provoked the ninja to draw their weapons, though the reason was unknown. It could be that they did not know who she was but that did not make since, until Kari remembered she changed her hair. Clearly, it was working now. The girl stopped and raised her hands. It was best to minimize any presence of a threat existing on her person. Her job was de-escalation and weapons drawn were the opposite of de-escalation.
" Sorry, I saw the commotion," the girl spoke in her dreary voice, "I was wondering if..."
"Listen shrimp, the adults are talking," the chunin interrupted in a stern tone.
"So adults draw arms to point at children?" Kari asked slowly. She hoped they ninja would calm down a bit and her allies would follow suit. Sure she had the church behind her, but the ninja would follow.
" You see, you ninja only serve to push around others who are smaller than you," added the lead priest.

Kari did not like him piggy backing off her words. It would only add more animosity to the situation.
"Your ground is no higher when you preach of peace with a sword in hand," Kari threw back.
"We only wish to defend ourselves. A weaponless ninja still is a ninja," the priest responded.

Kari sighed. While he was not wrong, a mob with weapons was not the symbol for peace. To Kari, she saw violence, violence, which would lead to escalation.
"You should still lower yours as well. A sign of good faith as my father would say." Kari turned to the priest; her jacket was unzipped though her collar was still up. Unless she faced the female lead priest, her face would be partly obstructed by the cloth. While she Kari hid her face to hide her trouble with showing the correct emotion, if she wanted the priest trust, then she would have to show at least that flaw. Kari was not smiling. Her blank face gave her an uncaring appearance, but it at least caused the crowd to calm down. They never saw a child so emotionless.
"In good faith, poetic," the lead priest commented before turning to her group, "Let's hear what the child has to say. We would hate to reenact the arrogance of the ninjas."
The chunin clenched her kunai but ultimately waved the rest of her squad to lower their weapons.
" All we want is peace in the village." The Chunin grunted.

Everyone actually listened. It shocked the girl though she did notice a priest comparing their selves to the ninja. It was a comparison that seemed to put the priest above them as if they were better. Still, they did listen and the ninja followed suit. So, Kari would just ignore it for now. Her next job was to figure out what the true issue was. The only way to do that was to get them to calmly speak about it in a turn fashion. Hopefully the two groups would be able to do just that.
"Good. It is good that you both decided to forgo violence for peace," Kari nodded approving of their actions, "Now let us find a most appropriate solution to the problem... What is the problem?"

Both leaders stayed quiet as if waiting for the other to start. Kari's eyes both groups, not sure why they were being quiet. Were they trying to show each other up? Did they want the other to make a mistake? Did they want her to start it? Ultimately, they were wasting time, her time, and she had lunch she wanted to eat. Finally, the ninjas started speaking.
"We have been hearing reports of members of their faction have been committing crimes in the city and them blaming ninjas. We have even heard reports that a female genin after asking for help when trying to put out a fire," The chunin rattled off as if she was reading a mission scroll herself. Kari knew this incident all too well, unless they were not talking about her. The story did match hers pretty well though. Kari was not stupid enough to reveal it happened to her but she did like that someone was taking action.

"You ninja have no evidence that it was my group. You spout these lies to get the public rallied up and then act behind hind the scenes to get what you want," the lead priest respond. She then opened her book and flipped through the pages, "Maki 6:9, Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that being should do to you: do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the spirits." The woman cleared her throat and closed the book, "We treat others the way we expect to be treated ourselves. To hurt others who wish to help is the same as being struck after offering shelter. Our people are taught virtue and will act according to the spirits will."
"So does this spirit will you to discriminate against us shinobi?" responded the chunin.
"We do not discriminate. All are welcome to be forgiven, as the spirit is the only judge, jury, and executioner. However, we do try to sweep our grounds of sin and hate. For example, the sin of using the demon's magic which we kindly ask of you to cease once on our grounds."
"Well, if you all would just be honest and hand over the criminals who hurt our own, we would gladly stay away from your unholy grounds."

"Enough," Kari said raising her voice just enough to over step the bickering adults. She was no expert but she knew bickering when she saw it, "So you want the ninja to stay away from the church, and the ninja want the ones who stoned m-this girl. No?" Kari folded her arms. She almost gave it away. She would have to be more careful next time.

"Sure, that is a little simple but for a normal civilian, that is a good summary," the chunin answered. The genin behind her all nodded with conversation about some of the smaller details that would make the summary better. Overall, they also agreed. Some of them even smiled, happy that a "normal citizen did not just outright go against them in favor of the religious branch. The priest side had a different type of tone. Their people were all bickering still. They seemed excited but they lacked smiles on their faces. Kari would have to think about adjusting the summary of things when dealing with religious people and the sort. Before she could even analyze what she said, the lead priest spoke up.
"You trivialize our words to make them equal to the ninja. Do you not have any sort of faith?" The lead priest lashed out.
"My faith and my desire for peace are to separate entities. Never the less, which piece of information would you like to change?" Kari responded.
"All of it. These ninja disgrace holy grounds. They should be held accountable for their actions, for their sins."
"We need to understand the actions first," Kari purposefully left out sins on the grounds of the lead priest's statement about being judged, "only then can we coordinate a solution."
"No girl, you have done enough. I demand you turn yourself in to the cardinal. You trespass enough and we had an agreement that you would stay out!" The woman stormed towards the chunin with not a shred of fear in her eyes. Some might call it divine intervention but Kari just saw it as a bad move. If she were to upset the chunin, this would end badly for everyone. Even her group gasped unsure if they wanted to follow the woman into the fray she was about to open up. However, one voice started to chant. That voice stood alone bolstering the crazy idea. This one voice would soon multiply like rabbits in heat. One voice became two. Two became 6. Soon every voice was thundering down the field though the only person to move was the lead priest. They picked up their weapons as their chants became a war cry, a true mob. Things were escalating too quickly, all because Kari's words were not enough. Maybe she did not have the correct emotion. Maybe she phrased things wrong. Worst, the chunin was smiling. Her hand was hidden behind her sleeve. She was ready to react though such an action could send the mob of priest into a frenzy. So many things, so many flags, failure was in site if Kari could not do something. The problem was that her only weapon, her words were useless. It was like a pebble running head first into a mountain. Kari had to do something else she would fail. Failure was not an option.

Kari and all her wisdom ran up in front of the priest. The woman was much taller than her, standing about 5 foot 8 inches. However, was still big enough to be a barrier. The woman stopped to look at the small girl. Kari had her hands out wide; her feet were plastered down so that she could not be easily pushed over. She also was focused on the woman's hip to remain a barricade against the ninja.
"Do you wish to dishonor your god?"
"I wish to keep everyone safe. It is my duty as a... resident here."
"You cannot protect them from the spirits wrath."
"You are no spirit. By standing here, I am protecting you and your people."
"Move out the way girl!"
The crowd behind the lead priest chanted and booed the girl for standing in the way. They demanded the woman seal their fate and get them hurt badly or killed. They sought violence when they needed peace. Kari would ignore the cries of the many. Though they had numbers, they were still cowards who were too afraid to stand by their armless leader despite having weapons on their own. They were just a bluff, a cheering stand for the hero.
"I won't move."
"THEN I WILL MAKE YOU." The woman made a fist and launched it into Kari's left eye. Kari, not expecting such action fell to the ground. Sure she could have took it and remained standing, but that would signal she was different, not a normal citizen. No, her reaction was good enough to sell the scene. The woman was breathing hard and not moving. The crowd behind her was silent. Their weapons lowered. Their true cowardliness was revealed. They bickered about not wanting to hurt normal people, not even the ninja. They just wanted to scare everyone. They could not believe the lead priest struck someone, a little girl at that.
"They are da...." The chunin started to speak but she was interrupted by Kari.
"I won't budge no matter how much you hit me." Kari got up off the ground. Her left eye was swollen but her feet were planted on the ground, "Violence won't bring peace. Only communication and understanding will."
Suddenly the crowd behind the priest started booing her. The woman had seal her fate and lost all right to lead. The woman turned back to the girl with her fist raised but a man and a woman from her group grabbed her, pulling her back.
"We are sorry... we did not want anyone to get hurt. We will work with the ninja this time..."

With that, Kari turned to the chunin who was smiling. It seemed the chunin had no problem with her stunt. Kari returned to her bento box, happy it was still in one piece. Then she started to walk back. Only the chunin stopped her.
"Good work out there. Though I don't think I would have let her hit me."
"I did not think she would... she called my bluff."
"Still, good work. We will make sure to put in a good word for you with the secretaries." She winked at Kari and then disappeared.

Kari just stood there, staring at the grass were the girl stood. They knew this whole time. Kari let out one last sigh. Well a completed mission was a completed mission.
