Cook Bake or Boil

While staying with an elderly couple in the Land of Moon, Junko started to become comfortable. She started helping more around the house with the chores, and even started lending a hand at their clothing shop downstairs. Slowly she became some what of a reoccurring face in the community, and more and more people came asking for aid. One day a middle aged woman came into the clothing shop with a handful of younger children by her sides. Junko could hear the woman insisting to them that they behave while in the store, and telling them that they could each pick out only one outfit.

Curious about the woman’s prediction she walked over to the group and introduced herself. She offered to help them pick out some outfits, try them on, and help decide on their final choice. The woman let out a happy sigh of relief that some would be able to assist her in dangling the kids, and then introduced herself as one of the workers at 5e local orphanage. After assisting the children and preparing them for check out, the woman lamented to Junko about the hardships the orphanage has been going through. Lack of funding had lead to them having to rely on rationing their food and community members contributing by donating home cooked meals and anything else they could part with.

As the woman and children left, bags I hand she couldn’t help but feel a pit in her stomach, she knew what it was like to go hungry as a child. Was she feeling, empathetic? Unsure of her emotions and determined to push them aside she began planning on the dish she would craft. Though she hadn’t been able to practice her skills in the kitchen lately due to lack of access to a kitchen, she hoped that she would be able to make something simple enough to not mess up. After thinking for a few hours she decided on a meal that her mother used to make her, a large pot of venison stew!

After saying her goodbyes to the couple she was staying with, she quickly went to the local market to buy bulk of various vegetables and some venison. While at the market she started familiarizing herself with some of the locals, some recognized her from her stroll with the Capybara Eldest and exchanged in some small talk with her. It was odd for her to be in such a welcoming community, growing up she was mostly cast aside or used to get more tips while her mother was performing. She was slowly but reluctantly growing attached to the people she interacted with. After acquiring all of the needed ingredients she made her way to the orphanage.

Walking into the building she was immediately rattled by all the noise, there were numerous children running around, crying, fighting, or just making loud noises. Feeling slightly overwhelmed she tried to find an adult that could direct her to where’s he needed to go. Once she had finally found and introduced herself to the staff, she told them her reason for being there. She noticed a sense of relief in the adults, as if a weight had been taken of their shoulders. With glee they ushered her into their kitchen. She was only a little bit nervous, but was excited to get back in the kitchen.

Already in the kitchen there were a few older kids who were there to help with prep and learn about the dish they were preparing. She pulled her long hair up into a high ponytail, got on an apron, then washed her hands. She then went on to explain the dish and how it was significant to her.

“As a child we didn’t have much money, and constantly relied on what we could hunt or forage for ourselves. Since we were constantly on the road it was hard to set up a place for sustainable farming, so we learned what food we could forge in whatever region we ended up in. If you don’t plan on traveling I recommend trying to set up a farm or a little garden where you can grow your own things. The veggies used in the stew we would harvest wild from whatever we could scrounge up. The venison and broth made from deer bones were hunted by my mother and I. This dish reminds me of the community I called home, and what it feels like to reap the rewards of my hard work.”

A wave of nostalgia crept over her as she reminisced over her past. Feeling the joy and happiness she felt as a child once again rekindled her passion for cooking. She assisted the kids in learning the proper techniques to clean, chop, and completely prepare their ingredients. Including but not limited to how to correctly peel and cube potatoes, cut and sear the meat, and how to make the perfect broth base. She then showed them how to correctly tell if it’s finished cooking, and what other things it can be eaten with. She broke out a handful of fresh loafs of bread and showed them how to portion it out into proper servings. The kids seemed to be excited about learning about various dishes, and were egger to ask questions when they came up.

She then assisted with serving out portions to all the kids in the orphanage. Making sure to laugh and joke with the kids, she wanted to make sure they left happy and full! She remembered what it felt like to go hungry, and it made her feel good to know she was able to help for at least one night. Perhaps she’d make it part of her routine and donate more of her time helping the kids out. She made sure to help with the clean up and heavily emphasized to the kids the importance of cleaning up your workspace after you’re finished.

After clean up the staff had asked her if she wanted to stay and spend some times with the kids, and she excitedly accepted. She told slightly over exaggerated stories of her musical endeavors, her adventures in the wilderness, and some fun dishes she had made with her mother. She helped get the little ones ready for bed by reading some bedtime stories. She then soon left the orphanage, feeling happy about how the day went.

Why Don't We Dance. Pt 2
Why Don't We Dance Pt 1

Junko was slowly and steadily was growing more accustomed to living life in one area. Though she was itching for travel, and performing in front of a large crowd she had to admit that her life had become significantly easier. The couple she was staying with treated her as their own child now, and she finally had a taste of what a normal, stable life was like. While working the couples shop, the traveling troupe of what once was fire spinners entered looking for new costumes. They seemed to be in a sad and rushed mood as they dug through the various clothes displayed.

She could hear the group chittering and chatting amongst themselves in a hushed whisper about their performance. They murmured about their performance, and how they needed a new act. Through the sounds of rustling clothes, it was hard to make out exactly what they were saying but her interest was piqued. While they shopped she wondered what had happened since the last time she saw the group and noticed that there seemed to be one less performer than before.

After their shopping spree they brought all the items to the check out counter. They then finally noticed that Junko had been the person who helped them before with their act and their faces lit up with excitement. What looked to be the leader of the group spoke up and exchanged some pleasantries with her. Junko inquired about how their performances were going, and how they have been since seeing them last. A bit solemnly the leader said that they recently had an accident with the fire spinning act.

He went on to tell her that while doing a performance one of their entertainers had smacked into one of the load bearing poles they use to to pitch up their tent. Causing the tent to collapse on one of their colleagues while her baton was lit. Quickly the tent caught fire and trapped their colleague under flame and fabric. During the chaos and screams of people running out from under the collapsing tent not nobody new she had become trapped. After the dust settled and the fire smoldered, all that could be found of her was some jewelry she was known to wear regularly.

He looked to the group who all held their heads low, and sighs disappointedly. A long quiet pause in the conversation was interrupted when Junko solemnly gave them her condolences. He accepted her condolences and stated that they had given up on fire spinning due to her passing and now needed to find a new routine, and fast. That’s why they were looking for new costumes, and scrambling to find a new act.

Junko gave them a hopeful smile and mentioned that’s she knew a thing or two about musical performances and would love to help them come up with a new act that would knock the socks off of any audience. The leader happily took her up on the offer, and told her where they’d been staying. Junko said she’d meet them after closing up the shop at the end of the day, and to get any musical instruments together that they could play. With that the troupe left, a little happier and more hopeful than when they walked in there.

The rest of the afternoon while the shop was empty she spent her quiet time brain storming and practicing her violin in preparation. Thankfully there were only a handful of customers that day, so she was able to dedicate a large amount of time preparing herself. Time passed and it was finally time to close up the shop. She told the old couple she was staying with that she’d be back later and not to wait on dinner for her. With goodbyes in order she headed off to the building the troupe said they were staying at.

Upon her arrival, hellos and pleasantries were exchanged for about half an hour then they hopped right into preparing their new act. Drawing on inspiration from her mother’s traveling group, she assigned each person a role depending on their skills. Only a handful of them knew how to play an instrument, and luckily one knew how to play a violin like her. Others without instruments she had them be dancers, or singers!

Through out the night she instructed them on how to play a few various musical numbers that could universally be used to tell a story with a narrator speak singing. Thankfully the entertainers quickly picked up on the sheet music, and were able to keep up with her fairly easily. They then moved onto story telling, taking inspiration from old mythology and various mythological creatures they were able to work together to come up with a few different stories they they’d be able to incorporate into their routine.

Moving onto choreography seemed to be an easy transition, the dancers and actors seemed to be well seasoned and came up with most of the movements on their own. Out of all the steps to compile a performance, dancing and choreography had always been a hard thing for her to get ahold of so thankfully it was out of her hands. During her downtime she reminisced quietly to herself about how much she yearned for this life again. How she yearned to be in a tight knit group of friends that were more like family,  but knew it was a hard and rough life to live.

They then spoke of stage presence, props, set decorations, and how to create a fun, upbeat environment. One of the performers had run to the local inn to get dinner and drink for the group, Junko included. For hours they drank, told stories, sung, danced, and enjoyed each others company. For the first time in years she felt accepted, involved, and excited to be part of a project.

However the joy soon ended as the night came to an end. After all was said and done she began her short walk back to where she was staying. The night was cold, dark, and lonely once again. She knew that what they were doing was unsustainable long term, but was so envious of the camaraderie that they had. She tucked her hands into her robes pockets and stumbled back into the old couples home. There waiting for her in her room was a bundle with some fresh fruits and bread, with a note saying “hope you had a good night”. After some snacking, she laid down to sleep for the night.
