The Sneaky Cat
Shimon-ji had no nobles nor grand, sweeping estates to its name, but many of the annual residents of the monastery did their part when taking care of the various stray dogs and cats who often visited. One such stray was dubbed Tamago, a cat whose fur blended in well enough with the snow to make him difficult to locate if he decided to wander off.
The animals, in theory, were free to come and go as they pleased, but the harsh winter environment and potential of larger predators in wait made a few of the monks come to her separately, worried about the cat’s safety in not so many words. If anything, Ume found it cute. Tamago in question wasn’t amazingly prone to wandering off, but did consider himself a parkour artist, so she found it most likey that rather than actually leaving the monastery, he was probably up a rafter somewhere.
Nevertheless, Ume shrugged on some warmer robes atop those she was already wearing as well as some layered cloth boots to guard against the cold. It wasn’t snowing when she first set foot outdoors, but what had precipitated the previous night hadn’t melted. The sun reflecting off the snow was near blinding. Much of it had been swept out of the courtyard for convenience, but she would have to be careful not to send piles of snow tumbling down from the roofs should she end up on top of them. Despite her strength, she was far from invincible.
