Travin waited for Koutaku to decide how he wanted to do this, and when the young man said he wanted Travin to go all out Travin gave him a nod. “Very well, I shall treat this fight as though you are a threat and eliminate you” he would say. His tone had gone cold as he laid down on the bed and the net of the VR system coming down. The room they stood in now was a blank white room 60 meters by 60 meters. Travin stood with his Seigan active 40 meters away from Koutaku putting 10 meters between them and the wall to their back. 


Travin was unable to make out what Koutaku had said due to the distance, but the moment the boy started to make handseals Travin knew it was time to kill him. Taking a deep breath as he started making his own handseals with his Seigan Upswelling active far faster than that of koutaku. Who seemed to be moving at a lazy pace or at least to that of what Travin was used to. Travins handseals happened at a speed of 175 Tiger, Ox, Snake, Dog, Ox as a ball of blue energy appeared within the palm of his hand. A mere moment before vanishing at a speed of 175 and detonating upon appearing 5 meters in front of Koutaku. 

The explosion would move at a speed of 175, 25 meters in every direction. Anything and everything the explosion touched would feel nothing as it was randomly teleported in a random direction on a molecular level. Creating a mist of debris and if Koutaku was still in the blast radius of Koutaku.

Noticing the rather sizable flare in chakra, and the sudden appearance—and then disappearance—of energy in his adversary’s hand, Koutaku performed a single handseal: The Seal of Confrontation.


Wind affinity chakra surged out from his body, swirling in patterns that rustled his clothes and hair. Then, in the next moment as he felt the significant boost to his own potency, a rapidly expanding sphere of spatial chakra erupted just 5 meters away from his person. His eyes widened fractionally, and he dashed to the right at his new max speed of 190 due to the enhancer technique. It was close initially as he outran Travin’s first attack, but he knew he’d need to do more than just evade. So, as he moved the necessary 30 or so meters to the right, ready to change tacts or alter his exact strategy or approach at any time, Koutaku readied his shuriken. Performing the necessary handseals for Sokumen Henkou, the young shinobi swiftly retained the technique at C rank within his clan’s Hoji Fuinjutsu.

Any other actions—aside from reacting accordingly—he’d wait to perform once he was outside the radius of the encroaching explosion behind him.

Thanks to his Seigan Travin saw the serge of chakra flow through Koutaku’s body upon making a single handseal. Before Koutaku could take a single step Travin was already performing handseals Ram, Tiger, Dog, Snake, Bird, Dragon, Ram. All at his max speed stat of 150 drawing his sword on the last handseal Travin would vanish in a blue light at a speed of 175. Before reappearing 26 meters to his right Koutaku’s left and the direction he had turned to run in. Koutaku had only made 7 meters by the time Travin reappeared and had yet to start performing his own handseals. 


Travin would make a few more handseals with his left-hand Rat, Tiger, Dragon, Snake while he swung his sword with his right hand. Water would form around his sword in mid-swing and fly off towards Koutaku in a 36-inch crescent-shaped blast of water. Moving straight towards Koutaku at a speed and power of 100. The blast would be aimed so that if Koutaku decided to dodge by going around or falling prone under the blast he would be caught within the Kami no te. 

By the time the blast would leave Travin’s sword small portals would be opened within his left sleeve.

(P.S without sensory or a chakra seeing doujutsu you would not have been able to feel my chakra flare for the Kami no te being activated, but this is just a friendly duel and no one is going to be killed so all is fine. just letting you know for future reference when it does matter bro)

Narrowing his eyes as Travin reappeared as he reached 19 meters from Koutaku’s location, the young man reached down at max speed as he saw the jounin performing handseals. Drawing his wakizashi as the crescent of water flew forth at 100 speed, Koutaku would slash diagonally with his wakizashi, moving from his right side where the blade had been sheathed and upwards towards his left side in an upwards motion.

The strike held such power behind it that the very air warped and bent and then a sharp crack almost like the barking of a dog was released. In the same instant, an invisible wave of force was unleashed from the blade, oriented so that it would intersect with the technique Travin had thrown Koutaku’s way. The blade of force held no chakra in it and was moving at 115 speed, with identical power. Thus, as the two technique’s met, the arc of force split Travin’s crescent in half, disrupting the stability of the technique and causing the water to spray harmlessly to the ground as the wave continued.


Having reduced his own running speed to 110 so as not to overtake his attack, the young shinobi--immediately after releasing his attack--went through a set of handseals at 190 speed.


Exhaling, Koutaku released a huge bullet of wind chakra that rapidly expanded to a sphere with a diameter of 10 meters as it traveled forth at 105 speed/power, heading straight for Travin. After he’d finished the technique, Wind Rejuvenation wore off. Changing tacts, Koutaku ran to his right and forwards at a 60-degree angle from his previous position, moving at 140 speed. Notably, the sphere of wind was traveling at a very slight angle, its trajectory aimed ever-so-slightly downwards so that once it had traveled the remaining 7 meters between it and Travin that it would strike the ground just behind where Travin had stood if it didn’t strike the jounin himself. In the scenario in which it struck anything, be it an object, Travin, or the ground itself, the sphere of wind would immediately explode outwards into an expanding explosion at 105 speed that would encompass a 25-meter radius. It would do damage at power, and if anything struck by it had lesser strength, it would be thrown at the speed of jutsu power. Koutaku, regardless, would remain totally immune to its effects and as he changed tacts he’d begin an additional set of handseals.


If circumstances changed, he would be ready to react at any time, be it as things began to transpire, or before such where possible.

A single miscalculation was all it took. In an instant Koutaku’s actions turned from a masterful counterattack and into evidence of the distance between him and his friend. He had much to learn it seemed, and he realized this only a moment after he was violently torn apart by the incredibly potent attack of the Rentei heir. Moments afterward, outside of the simulation, Koutaku took a deep shuddering breath and opened his eyes. Glancing across the room at Travin, the young Iouchiryo considered it all. Every move he’d made, every way that Travin had taken the initiative, trapped him in an almost unwinnable situation. He wouldn’t call it masterful, but it had been calculated and exact, and what had those handseals at the end been?

Not anything he recognized, but that wasn’t the point really. He’d perhaps been slightly overconfident. Maybe a bit more than that, it was hard to say, but given that he was outranked by a significant margin meant he was simply working at a deficit of experience relative to his compatriot.

There was no shame there, he told himself. It was obvious that he’d been working on himself, that he’d been moving forward. His family knew, he knew, hell Travin had put his faith in him. Clearly, he had something going for him, despite his failings. Despite his flaws.

No one was perfect and there was no shame in living imperfectly, but all that aside he needed to be better.

Close enough in the real world for Travin to hear--though he hadn’t been in the simulation--Koutaku spoke up.

“That was brilliant, and to think that was without your strongest asset. One major mistake and you immediately predicted it, set it up so that all it would take was one.”

A small smile quirked one edge of Koutaku’s lips upwards and an equally amused chuckle issued deep from his throat. Rising to his feet, Koutaku withdrew a single kunai in a flash and in a snap chakra flooded the blade, wreathing it in a twisting, coiling pattern. Koutaku exhaled and then spun on his heel, stopping so his body was sidelong, and threw the kunai at the wall.

It struck, embedding in the wall before the layers of chakra unfurled all at once. However, as they did so, the chakra expanding in a violent spiraling set of thin blades, the entire technique collapsed. Frowning slightly, Koutaku sighed and pulled the kunai back to himself via some wire. Catching it easily, Koutaku returned the implement to its rightful place and turned to Travin, working to cross the distance between them at a relaxed pace. It would simply be more comfortable to speak up close.

His frown fading, failure largely forgotten, Koutaku nodded and took the water from Travin when it was offered. Taking a long pull once he’d opened it, the young man considered Travin’s words. There was certainly merit there. Perhaps he needed to better prepare his methods of attack and consider how he could be countered more readily. It couldn’t be that difficult given his knowledge base. Raising a hand to his lips, Koutaku bit lightly at a nail, his gaze narrowing as he focused in on the lessons behind the Rentei heir’s words.

“Thank you Travin,” Koutaku said, his voice distant as his mind went through numerous possibilities and permutations of how the opening engagement of combat could go. It was frustrating to know that he hadn’t considered such enough already, but he’d do the work nonetheless. Being prepared was far more important to him than the frustration that those preparations caused him. After all, someday soon preparation could be a matter of life or death in the field. Perhaps more annoying is he knew that this would distract him too much to give fighting Travin another shot. He needed time to process this lesson and to consider the possibilities he hadn’t gone over already.

Clenching his teeth and forcibly turning part of his attention to his friend, Koutaku spoke up. “I’m admittedly going to need some time to really consider that. However, I assure you that next time we fight things will be different,” as he finished he flashed the jounin a smile.

“Anyways, I’m sure you’re rather busy. I’ll be here for awhile yet though so if you want to head out, feel free. If you’ve got anyone in mind who I could practice with though, feel free to send them through.”

That said, Koutaku retreated to the back of the room and sat down, his head laid on one hand and his elbow on his upraised knee as he sunk deeper into thought. In short, he had much to consider.
