Mission: Shadow a Queensman
It was an early morning for Kotetsu. He had a mission today. It was a fairly basic mission. As part of the process to move forward in the ranks of the village, it is always best to look at some of the different roles that shinobi have to have take in order for the village to run smoothly. Kotetsu was interested in either becoming an ANBU, or joining the Queensguard. Since most ANBU are sent on missions that are too dangerous for a Genin, and because the Queensguard normally cannot have distractions from their duties, Kotetsu opted to shadow a member of the Queensmen for the day. There is a difference in terms of ability between the Queensguard and the Queensmen, but they work together in ensuring the safety of the village. The Queensguard are the personal defense force of the Royal Palace, tasked with protecting the royal family. The Queensmen are the police force of the village. Because the Queensmen are the police force of the village, they have members working all hours of the day since crime does not sleep. As such, Kotetsu decided to ask one of the morning shift Queensmen if he could walk with him for the duration of his shift. Since they were normally 10 hours at most, it would allow Kotetsu some time afterwards to reflect on what he saw, and perhaps do a little training afterwards. He was still no closer to landing a hit on Valen, not for lack of trying. Anything he learned today may help give him an edge in their next sparring session.
It was already getting warm already for being five in the morning. The main Queensmen building was located in the center of town, which was where he was meeting the one he was going to be following for the day. Kotetsu made sure he had everything he needed for the day so that there would not be any reason for them to stop during the day because of him at least. Snacks and a lunch meal, water, and his ninja tools. Basically what he would bring on any mission he placed into his backpack and got ready for the day. He made his way to the center of town to meet up with the Queensman he would be shadowing. The man's name was Tando Kobayashi. He would be easy to spot since the Queensmen had a distinct uniform that made them easy to spot. It made sense since everyone should be able to see the members of the police force. When Kotetsu arrived at the center of town, he picked out Tando easily because of said uniform. Tando looked to be in his mid twenties. He stood around 5 feet 11 inches tall, and had an athletic build. He had light brown hair, green eyes, and tanned skin. 'Likely from being outside most of the day...' Kotetsu thought to himself as he approached the man.
Most of the Queensmen had some form of shinobi training, usually being the equivalent of a Genin or low-tier Chuunin when not they are not actual Shinobi. Tando was of the latter, being one of the more experienced Queensmen on duty currently. That worked in Kotetsu’s favour, since he would be able to potentially learn a lot about the village, considering he had not lived there very long. The Queensmen are skilled at making their way around the village quickly. Which is important, especially when there is a crime in progress. One of their most impressive qualities is their ability to remain impartial in the disputes between the Shinobi of the village, and the religious faction that denounces the “unwelcome squatters”.
Tando noticed the young shinobi approaching and nodded at him. ”You must be the Genin I was told would be shadowing me today in my shift, right?” He says to Kotetsu. “That’s right.” Kotetsu says in response. “I appreciate you allowing me to do so. I have always admired those that can help uphold the law. It is a very honourable profession, to serve and protect those that are precious to you.” Tando smiles at the young shinobi. “It is indeed and I am proud to serve. It is not these days that we will have anyone express interest in the Queensmen, mainly because of the tensions between the various factions in the village. I hope that will change further down the road. Only time will tell. The religious leaders are extremely anti-shinobi. Luckily I do not normally patrol their neighbourhoods so we should not have anything to worry about.”
The day starts off with Tando explaining his current patrol route, or “beat” as it is known among the Queensmen. Tando’s beat is to watch over the town square for an hour before making his way though the market area and the different shinobi clan compounds. After completing the circuit of the clan compounds (which normally takes several hours), he makes his way to the gates and checks on the gate guards, collecting a report to deliver to the Queensmen’s main building back in the center of town. After delivering the report, he remains in the centre of town and patrols between there and the market district for the rest of his shift. Luckily for the pair, there was very little in terms of excitement throughout the entire shift. There was some small disputes between shopkeepers and potential customers about the costs of various goods, but nothing escalated to the point where Tando was required to step in. Kotetsu was a little disappointed but it was for the best, since they were not there to start a fight. Maintaining order was the primary duty of the Queensmen, and their presence alone is usually enough to dissuade all but the most boisterous individuals from causing them to intercede in a conflict.
Kotetsu learned a lot in terms of watching Tando. Not so much in terms of shinobi techniques, but more in terms of how to carry yourself in public. After thanking Tando for allowing him to shadow the Queensman for the day, Kotetsu made his way home to write his report and continue his training to prepare for the Chuunin exams.
