The Dual Rank System

The Dual Rank System
Table of Contents
We operate on NRPG using a dual ranking system. The first rank is an In-Character Rank [IC Rank for short], and the second rank is your Power Rank. In-character rank is the one you might know from the Naruto/Boruto series and includes ranks such as Genin, Chunin, Jounin, Anbu, and Kage. This rank is gained through In-Character actions for your village, such as completing high-ranking missions, competing in exams and tournaments, political intrigue, etc.
On the other hand, the Power Rank of a character determines how powerful that character is, how many specialties and elements they can possess, and how many techniques they can learn.
These two ranks are separate to allow one to advance their character’s power even if they may not advance their village rank or vice versa. We believe it lends one a certain flexibility to forge a path forward and make the roleplaying experience their own.
But how exactly does it work?
Well, read on to find out more.
In-Character Rank
Your IC Rank is, quite simply, the rank you earn through your In-Character actions. Some villages offer exams, others provide special missions, and a rare barbaric few demand a trial by combat. Still, all allow one to progress in rank and prestige in their respective villages. Each Kage serves as the arbiter of ranks within their village; they hold power to bestow ranks and snatch them away on a whim. The standards they set are law and will serve as your path forward. Consequently, you will find each village unique in how it tests those who wish to advance in the shinobi hierarchy.
A broad outline of what you can expect—and the universal perks of—each rank. Naturally, each village is free to assign different responsibilities, boons, and even unlisted ranks if they choose [Be sure to ask about it in your village discord!].
Academy Student [Possible Starting Rank]
Everyone starts somewhere, as an Academy Student in the ninja world. Not an official ninjas, these characters devote themselves to studying the shinobi arts, including essential jutsu use, weapons training, and low-level strategy. A typical day for shinobi-hopeful consists of attending classes, analyzing, and, of course, sleeping. In terms of influence on the more significant military structure, such a character might as well be considered a citizen.
Stipend: 250 Ryo every Friday on their stat page [Any missed payments can simply be claimed as backpay].
Mission Permissions: Academy students cannot do missions - except for the Genin Exam when they are ready to rank up.
Rank Up Rewards: No rank-up reward at this is the lowest possible rank.
Genin
Upon successfully passing their exams, academy students are promoted to genin rank. The lowest rank in the military hierarchy of the hidden villages, Genin begins to take on low-level tasks to better their village. Typically, such missions are led by a higher-ranking shinobi/kunoichi who shepherds their Genin charges to success and, hopefully, further promotions. Genin can expect their days to be mundane as they complete low-level missions, train, and become more comfortable within the system they now find themselves in. In terms of influence, these characters tend to have very little and what little they do have is typically only found among those of similar rank (i.e., another genin).
A Genin Exam can be done alone, but it might require requesting a proctor in the appropriate sub-forum, waiting for the response, and posting a reply before meeting the word count requirements. The Genin exam cannot be taken without a character having 75 total stats [Without Bloodline Buffs] and knowing both the Transformation and Clone Jutsu.
Note A proctor is any rank higher than genin. Usually done by village shinobi, but if they have express permissions for the Kage, a village shinobi from another village may perform these exams.
Mission Permissions: Can do missions up to B Rank alone.
Stipend: 500 Ryo every Friday on their stat page [Any missed payments can simply be claimed as backpay].
Rank Up Rewards: A Shinobi Headband is received upon first reaching this rank.
Chunin
Whether through further exams or extraordinary accomplishments, a Genin is promoted to the rank of Chunin. The bulk of a hidden village’s military, Chunin, acts as rank and file soldiers. Such characters — relative to Genin — tend to take on more sensitive missions such as guarding military assets, escorting high-value persons, and seeing to the immigration processes of their respective villages. While not altogether familiar, chunin can also lead teams of Genin. Influence-wise, Chunin can command respect and obedience from those ranked below them. They may find their counsel valuable to those above them in the hierarchy if they are incredibly skilled.
Mission Permissions: Up to A-Rank Missions alone.
Stipend: 1000 Ryo every Friday on their stat page [Any missed payments can be claimed as backpay]. Chunin, due to their higher rank, receive an extra 2000 Ryo for all missions completed.
Rank Up Rewards: 5000 Ryo for the first time a character achieves this rank. Chunin Flak Jacket is received the first time a character reaches this rank.
Once a character has reached certain ranks, they are considered quite famous throughout their village and the surrounding lands. Unfortunately, this is not always a good thing, as the crime lords of the nations have standing bounties placed upon any of your ranks. For Chunin, this Bounty is equal to 30,000 Ryo.
Jounin
Exam scores, combat skill, and political savvy can all propel an accomplished Chunin to the level of Jounin. As high-ranking members of the hidden village hierarchy, these characters perform many tasks such as high-level strategy, mission planning, and high-risk mission execution. Most, if not all, Jounin are assigned a lower-level shinobi/kunoichi team to lead on missions and training. In times of strife, the onus falls on Jounin to step up, lead the rank, and file shinobi and kunoichi into combat. A character of this rank can expect their influence to extend to all the ranks below them and, more often than not, to the ears of the Kage.
Mission Permissions: Up to S Rank Missions.
Stipend: 2000 Ryo every Friday on their stat page [Any missed payments can be claimed as backpay]. Jounin, due to their rank, receives an extra 4000 Ryo for all missions completed.
Rank Up Rewards: 10,000 Ryo for the first time a character achieves this rank. Jounin Flak Jacket is received the first time a character reaches this rank.
Once a character has reached certain ranks, they are considered quite famous throughout their village and the surrounding lands. Unfortunately, this is not always a good thing, as the crime lords of the nations have standing bounties placed upon any of your ranks. For Jounin, this Bounty is equal to 75,000 Ryo.
ANBU
The elite of the elite and hand-selected by their Kage, only the most skilled shinobi/kunoichi advance to the rank of ANBU. Though these operatives' names differ from village to village, their mission does not. ANBU are the special operations soldiers of the hidden villages. They carry out espionage, assassinations, and security for the Kage of their village. Opting to mask their identity, these operatives carry out Kage's will and act with their authority when on the job. However, when not on the job, they only carry the influence and clout of a jounin or whatever rank their Kage assigns them outside their special operations work.
Mission Permissions: Up to S Rank Missions.
Stipend: 3500 Ryo every Friday on their stat page [Any missed payments can be claimed as backpay]. Due to their rank, Anbu receives an extra 7500 Ryo for all missions completed.
Rank Up Rewards: 10000 ryo for the first time a character achieves this rank. A character's village will often pay for special gear upon reaching this rank. The nature of said gear varies from village to village.
Once a character has reached certain ranks, they are considered quite famous throughout their village and the surrounding lands. Unfortunately, this is not always a good thing, as the crime lords of the nations have standing bounties placed upon any of your ranks. For Anbu, this Bounty is equal to 150,000 Ryo.
Master
Anbu Commander, Honoured Advisor, Lord; Masters throughout the villages go by many names and hold different positions. However, one thing is universal amongst those who achieve this rank. All who achieve the rank of the master are to be treated with the utmost respect even by their Kage, for they have been recognized as someone who is truly a Master of their craft.
Mission Permissions: Up to S Rank Missions.
Stipend: 5000 Ryo every Friday on their stat page [Any missed payments can be claimed as backpay]. Masters, due to their rank, receive an extra 10000 Ryo for all missions completed.
Rank Up Rewards: 20,000 Ryo. As part of achieving the rank of master, the character is granted access to the village's resources to craft one unique item. This item can be up to the value of 30,000 and is paid for from the village's funds.
Once a character has reached certain ranks, they are considered quite famous throughout their village and the surrounding lands. Unfortunately, this is not always a good thing, as the crime lords of the nations have standing bounties placed upon any of your rank. For Masters, this Bounty is equal to 300,000 Ryo.
Kage
Conquest, election, assassination, and more can all lead one to the venerable seat of Kage. The leader of a hidden village, Kage, typically sees their village’s needs and wants with an attentive eye. They set policy, declare war, and carry the power to promote those around them as they see fit. In times of war and peace alike, a kage’s word is supreme; you can expect a character of this level to be well known throughout their village and beyond.
Busy as they are with the day-to-day running of the village, Kage does not often have time to go on missions. Instead, they spend their time ensuring the village runs smoothly. As such, a kage draws a stipend of 5,000 ryo, which —unless otherwise noted— goes directly to their village’s treasury on the Friday of every week. They also receive a wage of 15000 Ryo bonus for any missions that they design to undertake.
Mission Permissions: A Kage can participate in any mission by themselves or with a team, but it must be done in an open thread.
Rank Up Rewards: Access to their village’s treasury.
Once a character has reached certain ranks, they are considered quite famous throughout their village and the surrounding lands. Unfortunately, this is not always a good thing, as the crime lords of the nations have standing bounties placed upon any of your rank. For Kage, this Bounty is equal to 500,000 Ryo.
In-Character Rank Outside the Village System
Here at NRPG, we have a few different 'In-Character Ranks' that fall outside of the Village system; these characters are those who are no longer a part of the villages for one reason or another. You can take two different routes, the first being Missing Ninja as stated below, a criminal of sorts. The other option being a Vagabond, otherwise known as an unaffiliated shinobi. Vagabonds can be from basically former shinobi to bounty hunters. The possibilities are endless.
Missing Ninja
Defectors, traitors, rapscallions, and missing ninjas have broken from the village system to strike out independently. They do not follow the in-character ranking system. Instead, they abide only by the power ranking system that follows. While they can choose to complete the standard paths to increase their Power Rank, Missing-Nin also have a unique tree that will allow them to advance in rank. However, this path does mean embracing their criminal nature and gaining notoriety.
Special Notes on Missing Ninja
- 1. Due to always being hunted, Missing-Nin cannot make private topics or include thread tags in their topic titles. The only exceptions to this rule are if the Missing-Nin is in a Base of Operations that they own or have been given permission to act within or are in the Social Zone of the Black Market sub-forum.
- 2. Before entering a village, a Missing-Nin must make a topic at the village gates and wait for 48-hours to pass or until someone replies before you are allowed entry. Should 48-hours pass, you can claim entry into the village. However, if you choose to do so, it could get you into trouble with the village.
- 3. Missing-Nin can ignore thread tags and invade topics if they so desire.
- 4. A Base of Operations for missing ninjas is a territory where they are not hunted and may use thread tags (Learn more here). A Base of Operations can also include a village if the Kage of the said village has formally allowed a Missing-Nin to stay there. If formally allowed to stay in a village, a Missing-Nin loses the ability to ignore thread tags.
- 5. E-rank MN cannot participate in missions except when they are to take the next step in their career. Learning The Ropes is the equivalent of a Genin Exam and can only be taken at a Border. This mission can never be invaded.
- 6., Unlike village ninjas, Missing ninjas do not have a single administrative entity to pay them wages. Nevertheless, they also receive a bonus commission for missions completed based upon their power rank and infamy. This is essentially their version of the wage that village ninjas receive based on their ranks.
The income is as follows- D-rank: No increase
- C-Rank: +2000 ryo for all missions
- B-Rank: +4000 ryo for all missions
- A-Rank: +7500 ryo for all missions
- S-Rank: +10000 ryo for all missions.
- 7. Missing-Nin, unlike Village-Nin, are not paid for their work with a stipend, but they will gain money weekly through less than savory means, depending on their level of notoriety.
Dirty Money- E-Rank 250 Ryo
- D-Rank 500 Ryo
- C-Rank 1000 Ryo
- B-Rank 2000 Ryo
- A-Rank 3500 Ryo
- S-Rank 5000 Ryo
- 8. Missing-Nin are criminals, and as such, they have had bounties placed on their heads by a wide variety of people. The rate for their heads will depend on the rank of the Missing-Nin.
- D-rank: 7,500
- C-rank: 20,000
- B-rank: 50,000
- A-rank: 125,000
- S-rank: 300,000
9. Once one is branded a criminal, there is no turning back. They are free to join villages, but their crimes will not be expunged, nor will their bounties be rescinded.
Unaffiliated Shinobi [Vagabonds]
Mercenaries and Wanderers, Vagabonds without homes to call their own, these people either do not follow any particular village or the village they once served no longer exists. Regardless of circumstance, these shinobi have a freedom that most long to possess but have realized that said freedom also comes with the danger of being completely unprotected. Like Missing-Nin, they do not follow the IC Rank System and only abide by the Power Ranking System [Explained Below]. Like Missing-Nin, they can choose to complete the standard paths to increase their Power Rank, but they also have their unique approach forward. This path is not so much bringing the world's criminals to justice, but it is certainly giving them a taste of their own medicine.
Special Notes on Vagabonds:
- 1. Due to the world's hazardous nature, Vagabonds cannot make private topics or include thread tags in their topic titles. The only exception to this rule is if the Vagabond is within a Base of Operations that they own or have permission to act within.
- 2. Before entering a village, a Vagabond must make a topic at the village gates and wait for 48 hours to pass or until someone replies before you are allowed entry. Should 48 hours pass, you can claim entry into the village. However, if you choose to do so, it could get you into trouble with the village.
- 3. A Base of Operations for Vagabonds is a territory where they can feel safe and may use thread tags (Learn more here). A Base of Operations can also include a village if the Kage of the said village has formally allowed the Vagabonds to stay there.
- 4., Unlike village ninja, Vagabonds do not have a single administrative entity to pay them wages. Nevertheless, they also receive a bonus commission for missions completed based upon their power rank and fame. This is essentially their version of the wage that village ninja receive based upon their ranks.
The income is as follows- D-rank: No increase
- C-Rank: +2000 ryo for all missions
- B-Rank: +4000 ryo for all missions
- A-Rank: +7500 ryo for all missions
- S-Rank: +10000 ryo for all missions.
- 5. Vagabonds, unlike Village-Nin and Missing-Nin, are not paid for the work they do with a stipend, nor do they gain their money by less than savory means. Instead, they are usually given money by more well-off people, who mistake their vagabond status for homelessness, and no amount of explaining will convince them.
Gift of Charity- E-Rank 250 Ryo
- D-Rank 500 Ryo
- C-Rank 1000 Ryo
- B-Rank 2000 Ryo
- A-Rank 3500 Ryo
- S-Rank 5000 Ryo
- 6. If a Vagabond ever steals from a character that is not a Missing-Nin, or attacks/kills a Village-Nin/Vagabond without being attacked first, they will be branded as a Missing-Nin, and once this is done, there is no way for them to go back to being a Vagabond.
- 7. E-rank Vagabonds cannot participate in missions except when they are to take the next step in their career. Learning The Ropes is the equivalent of a Genin Exam for Village Ninja and can only be taken at a Border. This mission can never be invaded.
- 8. Vagabonds usually make their names by disrupting crime around the nations; as such, they have made a lot of enemies, and those enemies are willing to pay quite a lot of ryo to have the heads of Vagabonds displayed. The rate for their heads will depend on the rank of the Vagabond.
- D-rank: 7,500
- C-rank: 20,000
- B-rank: 50,000
- A-rank: 125,000
- S-rank: 300,000
Power Ranks
Power rank, sometimes called Out-Of-Character Rank [OOC Rank], is our site gauging a character’s skill and experience in combat. Said skill manifests in the number/type of jutsu one can learn, the specialties one can hone, and the number of elemental affinities one can attune with [information on elements here]. For the most part, your power rank is not tied to your in-character rank and, in theory, allows one to retain the rank of Genin IC while having a Power Rank of S-rank. Once earned by meeting one of the listed requirements, a power rank can be lost only with the character's death. A replacement character (see character rules) may start one power rank below the character they are replacing.
While each power rank offers its unique reward depending on whether your character has a clan, a few universal rewards are gained upon each rank-up. The first is +100 bonus AP for every power rank gained, and the second is +20 stats for each power rank gained (If you max stats, you may take +50 AP instead of the stats).
Six Important Notes
- 1. Power rank must be earned in the sequence that follows (E->D->C->B->A->S). One cannot normally skip ranks, with the only real exceptions to this being if the character in question manages to kill an enemy shinobi of a much higher rank, in which case they will gain the rank of the character they managed to kill.
- 2. Power rank is, generally speaking, not something that is discussed or known In-Character. For the most part, it serves as a system to balance the mechanical aspects of our site.
- 3. Missions used to fulfill one power rank’s requirements cannot fulfill another power rank requirement later on. The same concept holds for the missing-ninja-exclusive options; the ryo stolen to fulfill one power rank's requirement does not stack with another.
- 4. To prevent everyone from having everything and signify the power gap between power ranks, each rank has a jutsu cap. A jutsu cap is the maximum number of jutsu you may train of a certain rank/type. You may not train if a certain rank/type of jutsu is not listed. Type, in this case, refers to whether the jutsu is a ‘custom’ or ‘canon.’ Check out the Jutsu rules to learn about what canon and custom jutsu.
- 5. When ranking up via mission, three potential paths may be undertaken (although certain paths will be locked once you have reached certain ranks), Low Stakes, Standard, and High Stakes.
The Low Stakes route is the safest but longest path, resulting in a character needing to take quite a few more missions before they can rank up while completely skipping the need for Hunter Missions. The Low Stakes route may only be used up to a maximum B-rank.6. Dual Ranking is meant to aid users in their growth on-site, meaning that all words cannot only be claimed for Stat points but simultaneously be applied to learning new Jutsu. For more in-depth understanding, head to the Stat/Jutsu System.
The Standard Path is the middle ground and the route the staff team recommends people take to gain some experience in combat on the board. This path consists of a mixture of standard missions and Hunter Missions.
The High Stakes path entirely skips the standard missions and allows you to undertake a single Hunter Mission to rank up. This Hunter Mission must be of a rank higher than the character's undertaking, and it must be done alone. If the character wins this Hunter Mission, they will gain the rank of the killed NPC.
Note: If Mission/Hunter Skip tickets from events are used they will only be able to skip Standard Path missions
