Storyline Continuation from In the Pale Moonlight - Part I (Sample RP)
---
Focusing back on the present, Kyuu jumped from the log and began the stereotypical, “please, help me… I’m lost and hurt” routine as the carriage entered the trap. The teen pulled back his hoodie to reveal the boyish, pleasant features that he used so often to con unsuspecting targets. Sporting a fake limp and quiver in his tone, he pleaded, “I’ve been out here all day with no water, can you help me, sir?”
Pulling alongside the teen, the driver remained silent as he brought the carriage to a halt; the lantern’s light grazing the man’s face just enough to see a scratched headband but not the old village symbol it once bore. He reached back, knocking atop the carriage to signal whoever was inside. Then, the side door swung open as a towering and rotund ninja, not unlike an Akimichi, emerged.
This is getting sketchier by the moment, and the itch is worse.
“How’d you get out here?” the imposing figure questioned apprehensively, drawing closer as he clutched a bo staff at his side. Before Kyuu could register the details of the man’s face, a kunai flew into it.
Ew! Ew! Come on, dude!
“Charge!” the Jashin's scream echoed from the treeline as his partners dashed out at different angles towards the carriage.
Immediately, the driver pulled the reins, signaling the two horses at lead to take flight. Kyuu quickly dove out of the way as Shimura and the unfortunate soul that chose to sleep with him emerged first to cut the equines and their master down. Blood splattered through the air, smacking the teen’s previously unblemished sport coat as the carriage ground to a halt before it could flee the trap.
Great, that’s not coming out.
Shimura and his deadly booty call moved to the carriage’s side to pull out the remaining occupant(s). But before they could reach the door, a stream of water suddenly exploded through the wood paneling, swinging from left to right and nearly blowing out the cabin wall. “Water Release: Water Severing Wave!” The jet cut through both of Kyuu’s “comrades," exploding them like balloons and spraying yet another round of fresh blood mist onto the teen.
Cool, cool… never liked that asshole anyway. Did like this jacket though! Ugh, screw this itch.
From within the lantern’s light, he watched as a woman dressed in a flowing robe emerged from the carriage, assuming a fighting stance with her eyes targeted directly at Kyuu. “Hold on, I’m not with them!” he screamed reflexively. “Or that guy!”
The kunoichi spun to her left in the direction of Kyuu’s outstretched finger right as the cultist revealed himself, slashing his victim’s shoulder with a kunai. With a bit of her blood and a lick of his tongue, the battle was now over and the prayer to Jashin complete. The cultist and the woman were linked, and with the plunge of the kunai into his own heart, she would die.
“Perfection…” he groaned erotically as his victim’s eyes widened in pain--the cultist digging the kunai deeper into his chest to inflict symbiotic death. The woman dropped to her knees, begging him with her last gasp.
“Please, not the child…” she choked out, the cries of an actual baby suddenly emerging from inside the carriage’s cabin. Now, Kyuu didn’t feel like the only youngin’ anymore.
“Well, that’s the whole reason we are here, my dear,” the cultist teased as he tilted his head to the side to observe the swaddled child laid upon the plush interior seats. “This babe’s blood will be so sweet.”
The target is a baby? Of course… this sick fuck. These damn itchy eyes.
Kyuu hopped up, swiping his right foot across the ground as he picked up a fist sized-rock. With a deep breath, he begrudgingly threw it at the cultist’s back. With barely a grunt, the freak turned wide-eyed towards his traitor. “Street rat! The hell did you think you were going to do with a rock?” he exclaimed incredulously, yet also unsurprised by the teen’s betrayal. “Knew you were going to be too soft for this job.” Removing his kunai from his chest, the cultist dangled it menacingly at Kyuu.
But before he could attack, the injured kunoichi cried out yet again, releasing another water stream that took the bastard Jashin’s head clean off, launching it into the forest and down a comically long ravine. The cultist’s body dropped to the dirt, but miraculously, the woman remained unharmed and surprised by this development. She hustled into the cabin, grabbing the crying infant in a mixture of both confusion and relief.
“How… how did I survive the link?” the woman asked exasperatedly, staring at the bodies littered about as she cradled the child back into silence.
“It’s a stupid technique,” Kyuu replied, wiping the still dripping blood from his coat in vain. “You just like kick some dirt and break the circle, and the thing doesn’t work anymore. I really don’t understand why anyone is scared of them outside of the weird pervert stuff,” he rambled before trailing off. “I mean they’re really into weird pervert stuff…”
The woman just stared, unsure of what to make of the situation as she noticed the break in the Jashin insignia at Kyuu’s feet. The strange teen, who clearly worked with her attackers, had also saved them for some reason.
“Anywho…” Kyuu continued, “These guys had their horses tied down the hill, and there’s this bookie I know… I’d rather leave the country than pay him off if you got room for one more, which it looks like you do! What do you say?” Kyuu asked sheepishly, ending the awkward moment with a little tap dance and a smile--just like a devil in the pale moonlight.
With that, the itch subsided.

Kyuu and the woman sat across from one another in the damaged carriage, trying to ignore the breeze emanating through the giant hole created by her water technique. She tightened her grip over the sleeping babe in her arms, still weary of the vagabond hitchhiker. Her Shadow Clone sat atop in the driver’s seat, guiding the stolen horses deeper into the darkness towards the Fire Country.
Peering through the jagged opening to his left, Kyuu activated his Cat Eyes with the Tiger seal, gazing into the darkness. Littered amidst the intermix of stone hillsides and trees bearing the early mark of winter’s frost was a litany of natural, geothermal hot springs. Despite the country’s penchant for criminal activity and violence, there was an equally contrasting beauty and serenity to it.
“Are you a ninja?” the woman finally asked, breaking the silence.
“I threw a rock at that guy…” Kyuu replied flatly, continuing to stare aimlessly into the wilderness. The kunoichi pointed to the teen’s eyes glistening amidst the moonlight, noting the slight intensification of chakra. “Just something I picked up along the way.”
“You pick up a lot of things along the way?” she inquired further.
“A lot, actually—including how to talk and say nothing at the same time. It’s quite a talent,” the teen sniped back, attempting to end the conversation.
The woman eyed him intently. “I need to know who it is sitting next to me and this child.”
“This child or your child?” Kyuu deflected. In response, the kunoichi made her own one-handed Tiger seal before beginning to cycle further through the signs. “Ok! Ok! Don’t blow my head off.”
“You know if that man was from the Jashin Temple, then he’s not dead,” she replied snarkily. The kunoichi resumed patting the child, joining Kyuu in staring nervously at the landscape.
“Yet another reason to get out of Hot Springs,” the teen muttered. Turning towards her, Kyuu studied the woman’s face for a moment—the longest he had looked at her since meeting. She was in her mid-twenties with shoulder-length hair that had a dark purple hue. Her eyes were brown, almost bottomless. Further, she appeared of average height and size although it was difficult to tell covered up by her long green robe.
The baby, who was wrapped in a similar green blanket, remained mostly out of view except for the movements of its shallow but steady breath. “Look, just had too many bad situations over the years stack up—one being a very recent pirate-looking fuck who I made a bad cockfight bet with.”
“You’re running away because of what?” the kunoichi blurted out with a giggle—a quick break from her otherwise tense demeanor to that point.
“Hey!” Kyuu barked in a somewhat faux offended manner. “The guy kills cocks if you know what I mean!”
“You pretty much said it literally.” The woman shook her head, appearing amused and annoyed at the same time. “You have it so easy…”
Kyuu leaned back in his seat, glaring at the kunoichi from below the brim of his hoodie. “Please, enlighten me.”
“Let me guess… edgy teenager who left the orphanage years ago because the headmaster was mean and maybe diddled you in the closet once or twice. Better yet, a child of a drug addict mother whose father abandoned them early on, so the only toys you ever had growing up was a stick and her used pads. Now, you’re on your own, running scams on good helpless people because life is soooo hard and unfair; therefore, you just don’t give a shit.” The woman rolled her eyes. “Now, say something petulant or stare at me in silence.”
With a lack of options, Kyuu obliged her in silence for a moment before suddenly changing to a more upbeat tone. “Wrong on all counts! I was born rich to a loving, royal family who never diddled anybody we were related to, and I’ve been tasked with carrying on our legacy in the prestigious global noodle trade. I was just walking to my destiny in a far off land when I rolled my ankle in a pothole, thankfully stumbling into the path of your carriage right in time to save you and your defenseless child!”
The woman leaned forward slightly, cocking her eyebrow at the teen. “Bullshit!” she exclaimed pointedly, reaching out with her free hand and underneath Kyuu’s hoodie. Placing her palm upon his forehead, she commanded, “Move and I spit a stream right through your face.”
Kyuu froze for a moment but was unable to help himself. “I always imagined when someone finally said that to me, it would be in bed.” The kunoichi’s gaze grew tenser. “Yeah ok, go for it.” A slight tingling then emanated from the woman’s fingertips, like an electrical massage radiating through the teen’s skull. “Just maybe, like… tell me what you’re doing.”
“It’s a basic mind reading technique…” Before the kunoichi could finish her sentence, Kyuu ducked away, practically diving into the corner of the cushioned bench. As the teen pulled his hoodie back down, the woman withdrew her hand, having seen enough of his life over just the past day. “I’m sorry… you just lost someone,” she said solemnly.
“Not the first…” the teen muttered. The two sat in silence again—only the soft whimper of the child could be heard as it finally began to stir. Kyuu continued to say nothing, folding his arms as he stared out into the dark landscape again.
“He was a friend… maybe a mentor?” the kunoichi asked, rocking the baby calmly.
“Not really. Just a farmer I did business with.” Kyuu volunteered nothing else in response. In truth, he had gotten old man Kano killed after ditching Bounty Station Central without covering the bet. The bookie and his gang found out that he had sold shrooms at the Station and eventually traced it back to Kano, the supplier.
After collecting his errand pay from the farmer, Kyuu hid out for a few days, returning to the cottage after thinking that things had blown over. Instead, the place was burned to the ground and his friend hung from a tree. Well, maybe not a friend—but at least someone the teen did not hate. That much, the kunoichi could feel through the brief trot into his memories. She continued to stare at him as he sunk his head lower, realizing the young teen was unlike the devil she had first thought.
It was my fault.
Kyuu’s eyes began to itch once more.
---
The morning dawn had already broken when the teen realized he had nodded off. The purple haired woman sat breastfeeding quietly, propped up against the side of the carriage while rightly refusing to cover herself.
So, it is her baby…
“We’re almost at the border,” she said weakly, having gotten very little sleep. Kyuu looked outside, noticing the landscape of scattered hot springs had given way to the dense unending forest of the Fire Country.
“So, what now?” Kyuu asked, unsure of where he stood with the her.
“You… get the fuck out,” she said bluntly. The woman motioned for her clone to stop the horses before kicking open what was left of the door.
“You fucking serious right now? We’re still in the middle of nowhere!” the teen protested.
“You tried to kill me, first of all,” she began.
Good point.
“Second, you don’t want to be caught dead with me in the Fire Country. I’m not exactly supposed to be here either, and I need to be much more careful traveling through a place like this.” The woman tucked her breast away as the young babe finished sucking, turning its head towards the teen. As the sunrise shined upon its face, the teen got his first good look at the child. He still couldn’t tell if it was a girl or boy. And it was ugly.
“So, you are a missing-nin after all? I’m guessing the others were too from the headband I saw? I couldn’t make out the village,” Kyuu mused.
“I don’t know why they insisted on still wearing the things,” the woman lamented, recalling the deceased carriage driver and her large bodyguard with a hint of sadness. “But like you said, people like us learn not to say too much.”
“Like us?” the teen replied sarcastically.
“Yes… people who have lost,” the kunoichi said sternly, her voice drifting off. Their eyes locked for a moment before Kyuu diverted his gaze and exited the carriage.
“Well, thanks for… half a ride anyway. Guess it was better than nothing,” he said mundanely.
“I let you keep your life. Maybe remember that you’re not the only one who has lost something next time you come across a good helpless person in need.” With that, she shut the tattered door and motioned for her clone to continue.
As the wobbly, damaged carriage trotted forward, Kyuu felt compelled to call out to the woman once more. “What’s your name!?” he shouted impulsively before she could get out of earshot. “I’m Yoshikuni Kyuusai!”
“Reiko,” he heard her call back as she gazed at him through the carriage’s hole before disappearing beyond the curvature of the road.
“Got a last name?” Kyuu shouted again, but he heard no response.
She must not have heard me.
As he continued to stare down the roadway, what appeared to be a vivid garden of flowers suddenly bloomed magnificently along its edges, quickly mesmerizing and pacifying the teen.
The itch in his eyes passed again.
