The Mask and the Lemur Empty The Mask and the Lemur

Mon May 22, 2023 7:59 am
In the frost-kissed land of Hyogagakure, nestled amidst towering peaks and white-cloaked valleys, Sakaiza found himself on the brink of a new chapter in his life. He had recently become a member of Hyogagakure, and was eager to explore its vast and mysterious lands. On a crisp wintery morning, Sakaiza decided to embark on a journey of discovery, setting foot into the vast expanse of the snowy wilderness. His breath warmed the frosty air as he stepped onto the untouched blanket of snow, his eyes filled with wonder and anticipation.

As he ventured deeper into the snowy landscape, the sounds of civilization faded away, replaced by the hushed whispers of the wind and the distant calls of winter birds. And off in the distance...a snowy forest beckoned him, its tall evergreens adorned with frosty garlands, and he followed the silent invitation. Each step he took felt like carving a path through a pristine canvas. And walking through the terrain had been a new challenge in and of itself to the Shinkou, as he felt the instability of the soft snow was harder to gain a sturdy footing on than what he was used to. But nevertheless the snow crunched beneath his boots, and the cold seeped through his clothing. And for some strange reason he reveled in the sensation, feeling alive and connected to the wintry world around him. The forest grew denser, the trees casting long shadows upon the ground, and a sense of mystery enveloped Sakaiza.

As he forged deeper into the woods, a soft, mesmerizing sight of a delicate flurry of snowflakes dancing in the air caught his eye, glittering like iridescent jewels in the pale sunlight. Its gentleness was unlike anything the swordsman had encountered in his travels from Old Sunagakure to the various country borders of the shinobi world. He had seen arid, foresty, sea swept, and barren environments but never had he bore witness to something of this magnitude. Drawn to the enchantment, Sakaiza followed the swirling snowflakes, weaving through the evergreens until he reached a small clearing. In the heart of this snowy forest, an ethereal beauty awaited him. The clearing was a haven of tranquility, the snow-capped ground glistening under the sunlight. Delicate ice crystals adorned the branches of the trees, casting a magical glow. Sakaiza couldn't help but be captivated by the serenity and grace that seemed to emanate from every corner of this wintry sanctuary. As he stood there, taking in the scene before him, a soft rustling noise broke the silence. Sakaiza turned, his eyes widening with curiosity, and there, perched on a branch, was what appeared to be a monkey...a lemur more specifically. Stealthily he crept closer to it to observe it better, and in the process he diverted his eyes from the monkey and redirected them to the snowy pathway. But his eyes would pinpoint the lemur again when a peculiar noise reached his ears which sounded like a soft rustling, almost like the fluttering of wings. And as his eyes returned to the low-hanging branch, he noticed that this creature was unlike anything he had ever seen...it was actually a winged lemur.

Sakaiza's eyes widened with wonder as he approached the small creature. Its fur was a soft shade of brown, blending perfectly with the tree bark behind it. Momo's wings, covered in delicate, feathery fur, glistened in the sunlight filtering through the trees. The winged lemur's large, round eyes peered at Sakaiza with a mix of curiosity and caution. With each step the swordsman took towards the lemur, its ears would twitch softly...listening to every movement Sakaiza made. But the Shinkou would stop when a few meters out, and to present a more friendly appearance he'd crouch down and rest his body weight onto one of his knees. His left hand would raise up and overtop of his frosty dreadlocks, then firmly grip the mask upon his face. With quick, subtle movement he'd remove the mask and allow the lemur to see his exposed face.

To avoid startling the lemur Sakaiza whispered to it, testing its personality. "Are you lost?"

The lemur tilted its head to the side, as if understanding Sakaiza's words. It emitted a low chirping sound, almost like a greeting. Sakaiza smiled, his heart warmed by the creature's presence and its friendly nature.

"No? So you must live here in this snowy forest?" Sakaiza asked, hoping for a another answer from the animal.

As if in response, the lemur leaped from the branch and hovered gracefully in the air, its wings flapping with a gentle rhythm. With its long curly tail it motioned for Sakaiza to follow, and the swordsman complied, treading carefully through the thick snow. He'd re-equip his mask upon his face, rise up, and follow the lemur's lead. The lemur guided Sakaiza through a maze of towering trees, their branches laden with snow. The snowy forest seemed to come alive with every step, as if the winter spirits themselves were awakening to witness this unlikely friendship. As they ventured deeper, the forest transformed, revealing a hidden sanctuary—a vast glade adorned with sparkling icicles and a gentle, frozen stream winding through its center. Sakaiza's eyes widened in awe as he took in the breathtaking sight. The glade was a haven of tranquility, untouched by the troubles of the world. The lemur perched on a nearby tree stump, inviting Sakaiza to sit beside it.

"So I had it wrong huh? This is actually your home," Sakaiza whispered, his voice carrying a hint of reverence.

The lemur responded by curling up beside him, seeming to want Sakaiza's warmth in the midst of the winter chill. The two sat in peaceful companionship, as if the world outside the snowy forest had ceased to exist. Sakaiza felt a profound connection with this little lemur, a bond forged through the magic of discovery and the serenity of nature. And time seemed to lose its hold on them, and as the sun began its descent, casting a warm golden glow upon the glade, Sakaiza knew it was time to bid farewell to his newfound friend. With a heavy heart, he stood up, brushing off the snow from his clothes.

"I must return to the village now," he murmured, his voice filled with gratitude. "Thank you for showing me this wondrous place."

The lemur chittered softly, as if understanding Sakaiza's words. It spread its wings wide, ready to take flight. Sakaiza stepped back, watching as it soared into the air, circling 10 meters above Sakaiza's position. Oddly enough it didn't seem to depart from its path or even set out on a new journey. Instead it just persisted its hover through the air, almost as if it was waiting to see what the swordsman did. Sakaiza was unsure, but there wasn't much that he could do from the ground level. And so instead he just focused on his return from the forest back to the village. As he paraded from the glade, he mentally documented every aspect of this place along with its floral and fauna. Although he was no veteran with identifying plants and wildlife, he had picked up some competency in this skill over the years. And so he was able to discern some of the floral as clovers, mountain ash, snowberries and willows. Simultaneously he could distinguish the animals as snow owls, foxes, hares, and even the occasional mooose in the distance. But still none of them compared to the somewhat mystic nature of the winged lemur he had encountered just moments ago. Curiously, he looked up into the air to see if it had still been following him, but to his dismay the lemur had been nowhere in sight. Perhaps it returned to its host and nestled up for warmth. Or it could have even gone on the hunt for some of the snowberries that flourished here. Either way, it wasn't Sakaiza's place to press the issue too much. The animals of this forest had their own system, and to disturb them would be no better than the invading forces of the major villages which attacked Old Sunagakure.

After some time spent walking through the forest, the swordsman finally made it back towards its entrance where he could see the village off in the near distance. Continuing through the snow, he'd stop abruptly when his ears picked up a familiar sound fluttering through the wind. Instinctively the Shinkou would turn towards the direction of its source and his eyes would immediately be met with the lemur flying directly at him. In somewhat of a crash, the lemur would swoop down upon Sakaiza's shoulder and plant his teeth into the man's exposed neck.

"Ah, what the-"

"Hey, you're just going to leave?"

Stunned, Sakaiza looked upon the lemur resting on his shoulder, as its chirping noise was drowned out and he could hear soft, juvenile voice reaching his mind. "I bit you so we could link our thoughts. So why'd you leave?"

"I..." Sakaiza fumbled, somewhat startled that he could communicate with the lemur, "I wasn't trying to be intrusive is all."

"Well, you weren't. But you're not half bad, and you're pretty warm. I am lost though...got separated from my family some time ago and have just been wandering about ever since."

"Ah, you're like me then. Perhaps you'd be better off with me then,"

"I was thinking the same. You know, I got a name...It's Shimo."

"As do I. Sakaiza, glad to be of your acquaintance Shimo."

The two deliberated for some time, before agreeing to venture alongside each other as companions. They'd return to the village and initially Sakaiza got some weird looks from the visitors, almost as if taming a lemur was taboo. But some people had dogs, cats, and other formerly wild animals. It just seemed like fate had a different plan for the Shinkou.
