The Past Catching Up

"Listen, Yazui”, Hitomi would say. “Our time here is short. When the veil started to weaken, we came to find you. We just wanted to see if you’re alright. And… we want to share something with you. If we had still been alive, telling you this would have been considered treason. And maybe it still is, but…” Hitomi hesitated. “Yazui…. Can you promise me that you mean the Tenka clan no harm?”

Yazui was beginning to grow curious. What secret was so important that it could potentially harm the Tenka? With such a secret, it was impossible for him not to reply “Yes.” It was true that he didn’t hold a grudge towards his clan. They played no part in his desertion from the village, and he saw no reason to go after them.

“Then listen. A few years ago, about two weeks after you left, another member of the Tenka clan fled the village. You might remember him. Tenka Ranji.” Yazui would nod while listening intently. “Ranji from the Glassblowers Guild, right?” He did remember Ranji and was surprised to hear about his desertion. Ranji had always seemed to be one of the most loyal members of the Tenka clan. He’d been known as a bit of a hardliner who took his job and duties to the clan very seriously and expected others to do the same. He was one of the last people he expected to desert the clan and the village. On the contrary, he was one of the people Yazui expected would hold the most animosity towards him for leaving.

Still, this was getting very interesting…

Spirit Rise Day Eleven:

“So, this means you know where he is?”

Yazui would sound a lot more chipper. Despite having found out that his parents had died and that he had neglected them in their final months, the thing that seemed to stir the most emotion in him was the prospect of something useful. Perhaps his soul had already started rotting long before leaving his village.“We’ve been keeping track of Ranji after he left, before we died. We didn’t pinpoint his location, but a lead told us he had crossed overseas and is now hiding out in the Sky Country.”, Hitomi would say. It was useful information for Yazui, but he was still a missing-nin. So the question remained.

“Why are you telling me this?”

“Because you’re our son.”, Hagutso would reply. “You may have left the village, but you’ll always be our son. When you become a shinobi, you are often forced to sacrifice the parts that make you human in order to become an emotionless tool for the village. However, it seems our human parts are never truly erased…”

After these words, there was only silence. Yazui felt discomfort at these words. The love they felt for him, the unconditional love…. How would he ever be able to repay it? Here he stood, a traitor and an opportunist who only noticed himself care for the lead on Ranji. Did he deserve their love? Did he deserve to receive something he wasn’t sure he would ever be able to give someone else?

“Thank you…”, he mumbled.

Spirit Rise Day Twelve

As the three specters and single human stood there among the moonlit yard, something began to shift. Yazui could feel it in his chest. It was as if some kind of pressure had been pushing down on him that was now slowly releasing. At the same time, a sudden chilly wind began howling through the night air, causing Yazui to involuntarily let out a small shudder. Suddenly for the first time and from a distance of about eleven meters, Hyouka would speak up “I can feel us getting pulled back. I’ve you’ve got anything left to say, say it now!” Yazui would look over at her and see that the sudden wind was beginning to drag along parts of the fog that made up her body, slowly dissipating her. It seemed like she was becoming more transparent by the minute, fading back into the afterlife.

Realizing this probably meant the same for his parents, Yazui turned towards them. “Father, mother. Thank you. I will not let the information you brought me go to waste!”, he would declare. “I will become a great shinobi and do you and the Tenka clan proud!” The spirits of his parents would only look at him as the wind swept up, dragging more fog along with it. By now, the ghosts’ arms and legs had been dragged along by the wind. Their torso was losing its shape, fog leaking away from it and into the wind like sand slipping through an hourglass. Perhaps they were unable to talk at this stage or perhaps they had nothing more to say. But the last look they gave Yazui almost seemed… sad.

The wind howled one more time, followed by a gust so powerful it caused Yazui to cover his face and focus chakra on his feet to not get blown off his feet. When the wind was gone, Yazui lowered his arms. Hyouka, Hagutso and Hitomi were all gone. The only hints of what happened was the damaged caused by the jutsu. Other than that, Yazui was alone again.

Spirit Rise Day Thirteen:

The last parts of fog making up the specter had vanished in the wind. Yazui was left alone among the battle-altered yard. “Ugh.. What a mess.” He looked over at the crater filled with water and rubble. The crater itself wasn’t anything a good earth style user couldn’t fix, but he hoped the contents of the now destroyed stall wasn’t anything valuable to Yugure. Otherwise… well, he’d have some explaining to do. Then again, none of his Kyuketsuki partners had witnessed him here, right? In that case, the destroyed yard wouldn’t be retraced back to him.

Taking his chances, Yazui slid into the darkness and slithered back the way he came. He lacked any proficiency with earth style anyway, so fixing the crater was beyond his current skills. He stalked the halls of the empty Yugure hideout, his light footsteps producing no echo. The silence had felt eerie when he first left his room, but now that the spectral tempest had passed it instead felt peaceful and calm. Yazui, however, was not tired. In fact, the news about Ranji had filled him with productive energy. To think there was another rogue Tenka out there somewhere…

Yazui would retreat through the still abandoned living space. He would then head back into his private dwelling, Yazui closed the door behind him. He would then head over to his large, empty desk and roll out a large map of the world over its surface. The night was still young, and the missing-nin had work to do!

Spirit Rising Day Fourteen

Dawn was slowly begin to rise and Yazui was still feverishly pouring over his map. First, he had closed in on the Sky Country itself. It was a large country that saw little involvement by and interest from the shinobi villages, which probably made it an ideal place for a missing-nin to hide provided they could keep under the radar and avoid suspicion. On the other hand, there was also no protection against hunter-nin should they track you down. All things considered, Yazui felt a lot safer here than he had felt stalking the wilderness.

After getting a general feel of the country and its populated locations, Yazui began researching the various ways to get there. The land was a sea away, which meant he would have to travel by boat. He would mark the accessible port towns on his map. The ones that were a short distance from here and wouldn’t place him too close to any large villages that might want to capture him and hand him over to Kumogakure or, perhaps, interrogate him about his new Kyuketsuki friends. It was a risk to take, and he would have to talk it over with Mizuki. But seeking out Ranji would prove a highly productive endeavor. With this man’s help, he would further unravel the secrets of the Tenka clan and master their abilities.

With a basic plan set for the future, Yazui finally felt fatigue fall over him. Satisfied, he would sink into his bed and stare at the ceiling. Sleep would fall over him, and he would dream of ambition.
