Re: Getting Good

The whistling clone nodded at the restatement of Pinochio’s advice, and continued to practice blowing the different pitches. Pinochio’s teachings vastly sped up the process, and the clone estimated that he would have the technique mastered by the end of the day. It was slightly tedious at first, just searching around for different pitches, and figuring out what they did, but it would soon become more fun as he was able to start casting jutsu using it.
Meanwhile, the original would soon have another task before him. It would seem that Gonk was correct in his assumption about the 100 fists of fury technique and it was indeed what he had unknowingly been training earlier. He was also correct in his guess that speed would be the key to mastering the technique, which Pinochio revealed was similar to the technique he had displayed earlier. It would also seem that the little genin had a plan for training Gonk’s speed for the jutsu. Oddly, the boy started collecting scraps of wood and placing them in a metal bin, which he brought to the center of the room. Even more surprisingly, Pinochio proceeded to set the wood on fire, letting the flames grow until he deemed them high enough. After a few moments, the boy poured some round brown things into the fire. Gonk at first couldn’t tell what they were, but his training partner revealed them to be chestnuts.
The task given to Gonk was simple. Retrieve the chestnuts without burning his hands. Gonk started to nod. The task was by no means complicated, but it would be tricky. Since there was the chance of being burned by the flames, there was also the chance that the clone could dispel if it was the one performing the task. Thus, Gonk himself would have to undergo the training to physically better himself.
“Alright, while I do this, you should practice that technique,” Gonk told the clone as he wracked his brain. “The one everyone’s been talking about lately. Oh right, Jotun Grip, that’s the name. Just practice it on one of those dummies over there.” The clone nodded at these instructions, and walked away, leaving Gonk alone with a trash can fire and a small genin.
“Alright, here goes nothing,” Gonk muttered as he prepared himself.
With a sharp exhale of breath, Gonk activated the gate of limit, significantly increasing his speed. To avoid getting burned, Gonk would start out with a significant increase to his speed, then work his way down to base speed. Ideally this crutch system would help Gonk complete the task and improve his speed.
Gonk took one more breath then shot his hand into the fire, grabbed a chestnut, and pulled his arm back out just in time. He just avoided being burned, as he was beginning to feel the heat right before his hand left the flames. But luckily, his scales were unscathed. He tried this a few more times, getting faster with every attempt, before deciding that it was time to take it up a notch. He exited the eight inner gates, wincing slightly as his body began feeling the repercussions of the technique. Luckily, he hadn’t been in that state for two long, and the pain subsided after a few moments.
In this time, Gonk turned his attention to his breathing, sending the oxygen throughout all of his cells. Gonk’s speed was once again increased, this time due to total concentration breathing. However, the increase was less this time, so when he attempted to grab a chestnut, he once again only barely made it out in time. He repeated this action even more times than he had while he was utilizing the eight inner gates, because after this, he would be transitioning to using no enhancers. He continued grabbing them until there were only three left, then he stopped for a moment and deactivated total concentration breathing.
The last three chestnuts would be the final test. He was going to attempt grabbing them while in his base state. He could already feel that this drill had improved his speed, but he would just have to hope it was enough. While it wouldn’t be the end of the world if he got a bit singed, it would be annoying and kind of embarrassing. He needed to get this right.
Gonk prepared to re-enter the flames once more, holding his hand out above them. Then suddenly, his hand dove in, grabbed a chestnut, and shot back out. Unscathed. Gonk grinned, he had done it. He did it twice more, and then all of the chestnuts lay on the floor around them.
“That was quite the training exercise,” Gonk told Pinochio with a grin. “I never would have thought to practice by doing something like this.”
Gonk turned to one of the nearby training dummies and tried out the technique once more. This time he was able to get the cone of punches out at rapid speed, and they were even able to hit the dummy with a significant amount of force.
“Well looks like I got that one down,” Gonk said happily. “In that case, want to tell me about another one of the techniques you know? There was one in your notebook that caught my eye, I think the name was Lightness Skill.”

Jotun grip. That was a wierd name for a weaponry technique, Pinochio thought to himself while completely forgetting that just because he'd given up his study of taijutsu doesn't mean everyone else in the village had. Thinking about it, the name rang some bells. Wasn't jotun an old norse word? He would need to check in with the otterbrooks about that at some point. Perhaps there were other followers of the old gods in the village. That would certainly make Saya a bit less special.
He watched excitedly as Gonk attempted the special training method he'd been through in order to learn his chestnuts roasting on an open fire technique. Of course for his training he got access to a blade, but the fire was also much hotter. So many fun afternoons were spent with steel half fused to his hand from the constant application of heat.
" ah yes. This is an ancient training method from the cursed town of jusenkyu. The only methodology behind learing the chestnuts roasting on an open fire fist technique, or kachu tenshin amaguriken. A pillar of the anything goes style of martial arts. Very intense. Quite painful." As he spoke, he adopted THAT tone. Yanno. The one used in movies to sound like a wisened old sensei thats really just very steriotypical and kind of cringe? It wasn't a great plan, but he felt it was important to the training sequence anyway. At the request to learn lightness skill, Pino's face scrunched up.
"Alright. This is. Well this ones super easy. Heres the thing. I already weight like. eighty five pounds in full gear so it was super easy for me. Basically you just contentrate really hard on doing the thing and i think it works? If you have a means of making it rain inside that should help. Theres a bunch of other ways to use the lightness skill but lets be real: that's the coolest function." How do you explain the seemingly impossible technique to someone not skilled in it? Is it really fair to call it seemingly impossible in a world where people can just make it rain in a large area and then turn that rain into murder bullets? These are the questions that plague a practiced ninja.
"Ok. Heres the plan. " He pulled the stack of weapons he'd been using earlier from the bag at his side, offering a handful to gonk. "Use these to practice. What you're gonna do right, is drop them with the pointy side facing up and then step on them and push off. If you do it right you can walk on them and gain some height. Then just keep doing that until you get across the room. I do have to warn you, if you end up doing it wrong theres maybe a small chance of the weapon just cutting through your foot and doing damage. I feel like that worry can be the driving force to help you figure out the technique." IN emphasis, he dropped one of the kunai in front of him. Stepping up he would completely forget the entire lesson he'd given, pushing the weapon into the ground and feeling the kunai split his shoes and skin as it slid into the heel of his foot. "FUCK! MY JORDANS!!!"

Gonk practiced the little man's new training exercise and after around half an hour, Gonk had the technique completely down. At this point it was getting late and Gonk was pretty exhausted so he decided to head home.
"You're quite good at coming up with these training exercises," Gonk told Pinocchio. "If you ever want to train again let me know. I had a lot of fun."
With a final wave farewell, Gonk exited the building and headed home, ready for a shower and dinner.
