The Oni

Growing up in the chaos of Hoshigakure, Yurei always dreamed of becoming a shinobi, despite the sentiments of both his village and his parents. The village itself was nearing what many thought a civil war, religious sects within the village vowing to destroy the shinobi residing within the City Blessed by the Stars. Each marred by tragedy, Yurei's parents, Takia and Roshi, strictly kept their son from ever learning of his lineage in order to protect him from a shinobi's harsh lifestyle and the Curse of Hatred. Despite their best efforts, Yurei went out in secret, attending the Hoshigakure Shinobi Academy and rapidly graduating despite his parental handicaps. However, it wasn't long before his father discovered the Uchiha's whereabouts.

Confronting his son in a fit of rage, Roshi lashed out at Yurei, professing the dangers of shinobi and the wars they alone had caused. Furious that his son had defied him by taking on the mantle of Shinobi, the same profession responsible for the deaths of those close to him, Roshi struck Yurei as Takia pleaded for him to stop.

As he rose his hand to strike once more, Yurei halted his assault, catching his father in a genjutsu in a fit of terror and adrenaline. The ensuing genjutsu, too strong for his father's weakened heart - a condition brought on by decades of smoking - resulted in Roshi's death. The trauma left Yurei with the knowledge of his heritage and a mark ingrained within his eyes - the Sharingan - the Kekkei Genkai of the Uchiha Clan.

In his career as a genin, Yurei met Damon Uchiha, a fellow clansman, though neither knew it at the time. Each found solace in another friend, Akio Inuzuka, and each of the three strove to bring an order severely lacking in Hoshigakure, Yurei specifically wishing to unite the hearts of everyone in the village via genjutsu, allowing them to understand one another through visions of one another's pain - shared experiences. Though admirable, Yurei's life was wrought with strife, his second and third tomoe each brought on by attacks carried out by the religious zealots - one on his home.

Excelling as a shinobi, Yurei quickly became a chuunin, helping out the village as best he could and meeting knew people, particularly those from the Hidden Cloud: Saya, Sakana, and Komon. Intrigued by the lack of internal conflict within their village, Yurei befriended Saya and Komon, the girl even promising aide in the future should he need it.

Before long, however, the pressures of the village grew too much for Akio to handle, and, in his frustration, the Inuzuka attempted to flee the village. Causing the accidental death of a villager, Akio was killed on sight by one Kenshin Uzumaki, a jounin within the village.

Despite dedicating his life to the village, Yurei was actively withheld the information of his comrade's passing by the Hogokage himself - Kyousuke Snow, who gave instructions for neither Kenshin nor Valen Akari, his deputy Kage, to speak of it.

Concerned over their friend's disappearance, Yurei and Damon sought out the truth behind Akio's absence, Yurei even going to the Hogokage's office himself along with Esu, Akio's dog. Despite the best efforts of the Deputy Kage, Valen even going so far as to have the kage's office bleached, Esu detected his master's scent within the room, a trace granted by Akio's corpse. Refused entry to Kyousuke's chambers and told that Akio had fled the village, Yurei left with the false promise that Valen would seek out Akio himself.

Their investigation fruitless, Yurei met with Damon once again, now seeking out the village gates. Reaching out to the guards on duty, the Uchiha discovered that the guard posted the night of Akio's death was home.

On arrival, each of the Uchiha saw the grief plastered on the man's face, and, after interrogation, each discovered that Akio had indeed been killed and that the village had lied to them. Struck with a sadness he'd not known since his father's death, Yurei crumbled, unlocking his Mangekyo Sharingan after hearing the news. This was made worse when the Uchiha were confronted by Kenshin Uzumaki himself, who divulged that the cover-up had come from the Hogokage himself.

Betrayed and bitter, Yurei began a downward spiral into cynicism, regarding shinobi and villager alike as monsters and the village he had strove to protect and help as afraid of his power, seeking to stop him from ever unlocking his Mangekyou Sharingan.

Continuing his training and attempting to save his relationship with his distant mother, Yurei strove to achieve the rank of Jounin so that he could obtain the power needed to shape the world around him - viewing it as a stepping stone. After a long tournament, the Uchiha emerged victorious, conquering each of his opponents, the final being Damon Uchiha himself. Shortly after his victory, however, Yurei was met with a man he thought to have converted through his genjutsu. Seeing that he had fallen into his old ways, Yurei gave up on his dream of connecting people, instead turning towards something else.

Despite his new position within the village, Yurei's career as a jounin was short-lived. Following Damon's own promotion, the pair were attacked upon returning to their home, the assailants nearly killing Esu. After a short confrontation, Yurei was left with the knowledge that his mother, Takia Uchiha, had tried to kill him, stating her son had died alongside his father and renouncing him as nothing more than a cold-blooded killer. She hated him.

Crushed, Yurei took up his belongings, retreating with Damon and Esu and healing him within his kamui realm. After waiting for what felt like an eternity to come to a decision, the Uchiha elected to abandon Hoshigakure - a venomous snake he'd tried far too often to show compassion to. Taking Saya up on her offer for sanctuary, Yurei ripped through space, appearing beside her with Damon as Missing Ninja. He quickly reunited with Komon as well, and it was arranged for the Uchiha to have refuge within the village.

His entire life defined by an innate desire for change, Yurei now drifts as nothing more than a spectator, an observer striving for the perspective needed to bring about real change in the world - for a better world.
