Truth Hurts Empty Truth Hurts

Wed Oct 27, 2021 8:54 am
Previous Mission: Truth (Part 2)

Mission Briefing:

As Guren ascended the stairway, he made sure that each step he took was as soft as possible. So far he and his comrades had successfully made it to this point without being detected, so he wanted to ensure it wasn't all for nothing. The stairway itself was chilling, damp, and dark. It was enough to inflict Guren with a minor case of goosebumps. But he paid no mind to his body's natural reaction to this place, for his mental fortitude was still strong. This place was essentially designed to deter outsiders from wanting to investigate and experience the inhumane acts that occurred here. This place was for the sick, for the ones who took joy in worshipping the lord of death. It was for those who were more dead inside than alive, and the only way they could generate even a sliver of life within them was by taking the life of another. Guren disgusted himself with this thought. No doubt he himself had taken lives before, but it wasn't for pleasure. It was for necessity, and in some cases for the sake of research. But to be fair, not all who sought pilgrimage in this unholy temple were doing it out of a love for killing. Some, the pure Jashinists, were doing it to maintain their immortality. But realistically this sample size had to be small. There was no chance that a large percentage of the temple's insiders were devoted Jashinists. The majority should just be worshippers. Or at least Guren hoped.

Throughout all of Guren's travels he had never been tasked with fighting a Jashinist before. Though he read enough on them to speculate on how he might do it. The one thing he knew not to do was relying on his blood style jutsu. That would simply play right into the hand of their most vilified technique:  the death controlling blood possessed jutsu. Instead we would need to rely on the other means within his arsenal which thankfully was quite extensive.

While his mind contemplated the different approaches he would need to take, he continued up the spiral shaft of stairs. At this point it felt like they were seemingly endless. And the plain walls within the stairwell gave no indication of what floor of the building they were climbing to. However thus far there had been no exit leading to another hallway, room, or anything. So at least there was the comfort in knowing this was the only way to go. Just the worst part of it was not knowing how much longer there was. But after some time, some sounds were able to be heard sourced from the top of the stairway. From what Guren could tell, it sounded like chanting yet he couldn't make the words out. Perhaps another demonic ritual. His eyes directed their gaze upward, and with the bit of chakra vision Guren was blessed with he could see a fog of sinister chakra pouring down the stairwell.

"Hey, we're almost there. And just a warning, whatever awaits us has a vast and wicked chakra reservoir. This may prove to be quite the challenge..."

The team should continue up the vertical pathway, yet proceed with caution; for what awaited them was a true challenge. Recognizing this, Guren would pause in his tracks and call for a little reinforcements. He would prick his finger with one of his spiked rings, and place his palm flat on the ground. Within a second, Bushi would spring himself from the floor and his talons would be perched upon one of the stairs. The size of the stairway was just enough to permit Bushi to stand up straight within it.

"I see you summoned me. Must be in some trouble huh?"

"Bushi, good to see you again. These are my friends, Kota and Asuka. I don't really have time to explain the situation, but just know that we have a fight ahead of us. I need you to be ready and help us take down whoever is in our way."

"Say no more Guren. You know I am ready whenever!"

Now with another joining their ranks, the odds of success would increase a bit. They would have gone up dramatically had Guren been able to summon a stronger vulture, yet the dimensions of the stairwell and likely whatever lied atop of it would not allow him to do so. Nevertheless, Guren was confident in Bushi's abilities. He was Genjutsu and Ninjutsu capable, just like Guren. Thus the potential to synergize techniques was high. Now the quartet of a team would continue up until they approached a large, rustic door which marked the end of the stairs. Upon it was a Jashinist emblem painted with blood, just above a rounded door knob. Knowing the time to fight was upon them, Guren turned to look at his team and offered them a confident nod of his head. He focused his attention back on the door and could see the smog of evil chakra pouring out from underneath it. His left hand moved towards the door knob before gripping it and turning it slowly. He would push the door open lightly. But as soon as it was opened, the door would aggressively swing upon and barrel into the wall it was supported by. Now the evil chakra was rolling out and the source of it could be seen standing at the furthers corner of the room (10 meters away, room is 10m x 10m x 5m). Her face was only illuminated by the flickering candles which she stood over. With each flicker of the candles, the room lit up. A careful observation would reveal there were four others in the room: two of which seeming to be shinobi, while the other two were abominations of some sort of failed experiment (think undead).

In unison, all four individuals in the room would whip their heads up so that their gazes were focused on the Sunagakure Team who had infiltrated their lair.

"No....No...No, no, no, no, nonono. NOOO! The ritual is not yet complete. GO! Stop them! They must not interrupt before I have amassed my power!" the ringleader would cry while standing above the candles, surrounded by a bloodied Jashinist symbol. And with that the two shinobi and two undead creatures would begin dashing towards the entrance to the room. A quick pan of the room and its individuals revealed to Guren that the most potent chakra signatures were coming from the ringleader, the shinobi, and then the undead in that order. With a fast decision, Guren would calmly say to his team. "Me and Bushi will handle the shinobi. You two take those creatures. Their leader seems preoccupied..Now go!"

And with that, Guren and Bushi would spring into action. (Detailing my combat next post, feel free to do the same or to start yours now).

Truth Hurts Empty Re: Truth Hurts

Sat Oct 30, 2021 9:19 am
The air of nervous excitement around Kota was practically tangible. This would be his first real fight against others since becoming a shinobi. For a genin that graduated from the academy less than a year ago. He had to consider this a future turning point in his life. He considered it common sense for a ninja to be able to fight and kill if necessary. He even steeled his own heart and prepared his parents in case he passed away. Kota did not expect to be able to kill others and run no risk of dying himself. He considered this fight the true way to test his mettle.

As they started to ascend the stairway Kota prepared his gear. He formed the needed hand signs and used the armory seal to call his quiver to him. It came with a nice selection of all the arrows he could currently buy, all ten of them. It was just 10 normal arrows loaded into his quiver. Underneath his cloak his movement would have looked suspicious to anyone that bothered to look. His body was growing hard and lumpy in strange places. Kota also took out the explosive tags and placed them on an arrow each. If worse comes to worse he would have no qualms about blowing the entire place up.

Walking upstairs and multitasking was an easier task. He was lucky the staircase was decently sized as well as time feeling like he slowed down. The last bit was more of his perception as he radiated with excitement. It was not as if time was slowing down to give him ample preparation.

When Guren summoned a vulture, Kota was impressed. He considered summoning a contract to aid in battle to be an advanced ability. He thought it showed an impressive ability behind Guren’s rank. The vulture had a bloody scent that Kota could not notice. It blended in too well with the scent of blood from the walls. The blood scent from the walls and area would only grow more as they reached the top of the stairs. Kota found himself scrunching his nose from it all. The overall smell of blood and flesh messing him up. He worked as a butcher one summer and even that was not as bad.

When the door swung open Kota swung off his jashinist disguise. He no longer needed to wear it. The outfit was also uncomfortable to wear as it covered his good looks and restricted movement. Now he felt he could give his all to the battle at hand.

The first thing Kota had to do was take a look around the room. His ability to sense chakra was not up to par. His ability of threat assessment was honed in the wild. From the glance he pegged the one wearing the leading outfit as the leader. The figure came with two assistants that were helping out with the experiment. He could not tell which of the two was stronger but if they listened to the jashinist then they would have to be weaker. Shinobi only listened to the strong for a reason, if that was financial or physical strength was yet to be seen.

“Aye aye Captain!” Kota was given the order to take down two undead creatures. He had originally overlooked them as he did not believe they were important. When they started to move towards him and Kit, Kota would stand in front of the other guy.“As the medic you should be the last in battle. If things go sideways we will need someone to watch our back.” Kota would not hesitate to allow the other genin to watch his back. He believed people showed their true selves in the heat of the moment. As long as Asuka would do a good job. Kota would enjoy working together with him. Growing up pretty poor Kota understood the benefits of a great medic. A great medic was the only reason he came to Sunagakure in the first place. A fluent movement and plenty of practice. Kota had an arrow knocked and aimed at the nearest undead.

Truth Hurts Empty Re: Truth Hurts

Sat Oct 30, 2021 8:24 pm
And with that, the fight would begin. Guren quickly analyzed the size of the room and the relative positions of his enemies and his comrades. There wasn’t much space to unleash wide scale jutsu, yet simultaneously he was restricted in which techniques for a couple of reasons. The first, he didn’t want any of his jutsu to negatively impact Kota or Asuka. The arsenal of genjutsu he had would likely trap both genin in an illusion even if his aim was just the enemies. Additionally he didn’t want to cause too much of a ruckus in the room and open up the possibilities for reinforcements to come. Instead, he would need to keep his side of the battle as contained as possible.  As the quartet of threats began to rush the Sunagakure trio, Guren’s eyes would flicker and display one beautiful blue seigan and a dastardly red ketsuryugan. It was very likely that this fight could be simplified through the use of ocular doujutsu, but this could only come if there were not multiple threats pursuing him. But that is what he had Bushi for.

The duo of shinobi would rapidly approach Guren, each wielding a weapon. The shinobi on the left, a straight sword; and the shinobi on the right, a kunai. It was likely that the swordsman was a weapons expert, and the one on the left was simply supporting him. So there was potential that the swordsman would be the lead attacker, and the kunai wielder would be looking for an opening. With this in mind, Guren sought to rout the supporting cast first. And so via mental telepathy, Guren and Bushi would devise a quick plan. “Bushi, here they come! Evade the incoming swing of that blade, and garner his attention towards the left of the room. I will lead the other over there as well and then create some separation so that Kota and Asuka have room to fight those beasts!” Guren would command. With a simple “kaw” Bushi would agree, and dart forward at full speed. Resultantly, he would bait the swordsman into a wild strike which would narrowly miss the vulture. Right after, Bushi would maneuver to the left of the room successfully luring the sword wielder over there. In turn, Guren would pursue the duo which separated off. This would create the impression that Guren and Bushi were actually after the swordsman first. And so the kunai wielding shinobi would immediately change his path of trajectory and follow after the three. This would free up the right side of the room for Kota and Asuka to have ample space to battle the undead. It was up to those two to attract the attention of the abominations over there.

Actions of Asuka's Undead:

Actions of Kota's Undead:

Now as the quartet relocated to the left, the swordsman readied another strike at Bushi who was flying before him. Guren, with a clear view of this, warned the vulture in an instant. “Fly up!” he would say. And with haste, Bushi’s flight trajectory would angle at a hard 90 degrees upwards to the ceiling. The incoming strike from the swordsman resulted in him plunging his sword into the depths of the wall. Now with a vantage point of his own, Bushi would see the final shinobi encroaching upon Guren’s flank. “Behind you!” he would warn Guren. And so Guren would turn his head slightly, now with a clear view of the shinobi to his rear and extend his right arm towards him. At this time, the shinobi had just begun to start a string of hand seals with his free hand. But Guren did not intend on allowing him to finish these seals. When his arm finished extending, a massive lancet of chakra would engulf his arm and rapidly expand in the direction of the incoming shinobi. By this time, the shinobi had been concluding his second to last hand seal. The timing of both Guren’s and the shinobi’s technique were such that as the chakra lancet’s expansion had reached the body of the shinobi, he had just finished his final hand seal. But it would be too late to get his technique off. Due to his incoming momentum towards Guren, he sealed his own fate. The lancet would pierce the body of the shinobi, interrupting his chakra flow and subsequently impaling himself onto the extension of Guren’s arm.

“Nice!” Bushi would exclaim in glee as he redirected his flight pattern to now however. All in that short instant, the swordsman had retrieved his sword from its stuck position. When he would turn around, his eyes would fall upon Guren’s chakra lancet receding back into his body. The other shinobi would be falling to the ground, leaking blood from his abdomen. He would fall to his knees and soon after become cold and lifeless. In a rage, his partner would lunge towards Guren with a swipe at his midsection. Guren would redirect his attention back towards this shinobi and as his gaze met the eye of the swordsman, the illusion would begin.

~The Genjutsu~
The swordsman would suddenly find himself on the center stage, shackled and chained to the walls like some type of caged animal. In a panic, his gaze would meet the floor where he would find his body dripping blood. The blood formed a trail which ended several feet in front of him at a Jashinist symbol painted in his blood. Within the symbol stood none other than the ring leader who he trusted so dearly. She was performing her cult’s sacred blood ritual on him. Betrayed, scared, and agony were among some of the many emotions that would overwhelm the shinobi. The ring leader would take turns using a kunai to slash at her wrist, body, neck, and other portions of her body. With each gash, the insurmountable pain would surge through the shinobi and electrify his body. And in seconds, he was completely overwhelmed with fear. Fear of dying, fear of torment, fear of being on the receiving end of the torture which the cultists he supported inflicted on poor victims on a daily basis. And this sensation and abuse would continue endlessly. And with that, he was damned to his misfortune.

~Reality~
Bushi would see the paralytic effect which Guren’s genjutsu would afflict the swordsman with. In the real world, both men would be locked into a petrifying gaze towards each other. Understanding the opportunity at hand, Bushi would accelerate full speed from his previous position towards the sword wielding shinobi. He would begin to barrel in a spiraling motion at a speed so quick that when he would pierce the neck of the shinobi, his beak would wind and drill cleanly through it. Blood would splatter over the nearby wall, the floor, and all over Bushi’s beak. He would trill with excitement, and swiftly rotate his body around to face Guren. Guren, freed from the paralysis of inflicting genjutsu, would turn his attention towards Bushi and offer a slight nod.

“That was easier than expected…”

“It was, but I’ve exhausted myself…” Bushi would confirm. And with an abrupt *POOF*, he vanished. Guren would then direct his focus to the right of the room, where Kota and Asuka should be concluding their individual fights with the undead. Thankfully, both were unharmed and seemed to end their fights just as quick as Guren and Bushi finished theirs. Without a second thought, Guren would draw a kunai from the weapon pouch residing on his thigh, and would hurl it in the direction of the ring leader who was still performing her ritual. The kunai whizzed through the air, pinpointed to pierce her skull. But with slight effort, she would angle her head slightly to the right and evade the kunai.

“Fool, you think that’s enough to finish me?” she would laugh aloud.

Yet right as she finished her question, the wall behind her would explode and the shockwave of the blast would launch her forward and out of the ritual circle. She would fall to the floor, and the room now exposed to the outside environment, would permit a stormy draft to harmless blow around the room. Subsequently all the fires of the candles would vanish, and the ritual would end.

“IMBECILES!”  the wretched woman would screech. “Do you know what you’ve done? You will PAY!” she cried aloud. Instantly, her fingers would take the form of long claws. She would jump up from her fallen position and land upon her two feet. Her long claws would dangle and reach the ground. And so as she ran forward at a ridiculous speed, sparks would kick up from the friction of the claws against the floor. The sparks would turn into streams of flames as her pace would rapidly hasten. Sensing the threat, the ring leader imposed on the team, Guren would seek to gain her attention and stop her pursuit. His heads would fire through a series of seals in a flash, and upon completion, Guren would expel a powerful stream of water and lightning from his mouth in the shape of a thin beam. As it neared the woman, it would expand and fan outward into the shape of a wide cone. Due to the small size of the room, it would be difficult for her to dodge it.

But why would she need to evade it when she could just block it? She would recede her claws upward towards her body in a defensive motion while still pushing forward. Upon contact, her forward pace would halt and her claws would shield her. Yet the sheer strength of Guren’s jutsu would crack and break the claws upon her left hand. It would drop to her side in pain, anguish, and paralysis yet she would continue forward. He would end this technique, and see she was now still pushing towards the Chinoike himself. Yet she was injured and only her right hand was now a threat. With a spin of the rings on his finger, Guren would sling his hand forward and a tightly compressed, blunt ended wire of blood would fire from his hand towards the woman. Now that she was no longer performing a blood ritual, his blood release techniques were fair game. Her response to the incoming wire was to raise her right hand’s claw towards it. The result was the wires entangling themselves between the claws and restricting the movement of her hand. Now with both hands rendered useless, Guren would focus his might to bring the woman to her knees. Rapidly, he’d turn his head towards Kota and Asuka and exclaim “Now! Deliver the finishing blow while she’s done!”

Guren recognized the good experience this would be for one of the genin to bring such a threat down, and so he sought to award them this accolade. Who would take the final attack though? It was up to them. Whatever they did would likely be enough to kill the beast of a woman. And when her death was completed, the world around the trio of Sunagakure shinobi would begin to fade. The surrounding world around them would melt from the reality it portrayed into a spectral abyss, resembling the deepest depths of space. Then everything would blacken, and the only things that would remain would be Kota, Asuka, and Guren. And suddenly a wave of relief would fall upon the three. Guren would smile lightly and look upon his comrades. “Great work you two,” he said warmly. “Maybe now, things will go back to normal…” As Guren spoke, each member of the team would begin to dissipate into the abyss as well. And when this was concluded, each would awaken to the reality of the real world: in the comfort of Sunagakure. Guren would wake up in his own bed within his apartment. He would spend several moments reflecting on the events that occurred and wondered to himself if it really was all just a dream. Perhaps he would never know.

Truth Hurts Empty Re: Truth Hurts

Sun Oct 31, 2021 11:05 am
Kota was enjoying the fight as soon as it started. The main reason was that as his first fight he believed he had an absolute advantage. As an archer his best ability was selective target removal. The tight confines of the room were better for him. If his targets could not move as well he would have the innate advantage. Kota trained spear fishing from a barrel. The work that he would have to put into clearing the room of danger would be the same concept, at least hopefully.

By the time the battle began, Kota found himself working in tandem with Guren. As the battle started traveling to one side of the room. Kota was his own zombie without anyone else to bother him. He was going to take care of the one going to attack Asuka. As he did not listen Kota figured he could handle it. Besides, as long as the man did not die Kota would not have to feel too bad about it. He still had the firm belief that all shinobi were forged through fire. It would be the only way to allow Asuka to grow. To constantly try to protect him may stunt his growth and abilities. Kota wanted all Suna ninja to be able to fight and protect the village. Admittedly it was his home. The place grew on him like a parasitic tapeworm.

The zombie attacking Kota was fast. If Kota was blind he could still find the zombie. The rotting smell wafting from it would be hard enough to miss. Kota had his arrow nocked and ready to fire. He did not release the shot and instead swung his bow in a wide arc, starting from his further right side, to avoid Asuka or Guren getting hit. His arrow was still in place on the bow. The sharp edge of his bow cut into the air. As the zombie would leap up to bite him it would be met with a million sparkling pieces of glass. The reason why Kota would wait was to see if the zombie was going to use hand signs before turning. He did not want to waste any more arrows than he needed. His glass shard swing was just as strong. The attack was strong enough to impale the zombie and at close range, it would turn the creature into undead mashed potatoes. A pile of creepy goo just hitting the floor. The entire battle took the span of a moment. Kota paid enough attention to make sure his opponent did not move. Taking some steps away from it just in case.

When Kota turned his body around while using glass shard swing, he would be facing back at Asuka. The arrow is still in place and ready to be fired. Kota was not going to use the arrow on the other suna genin. It was an insurance policy in case the young man needed help. His reaction speed could have the arrow placed in the zombies back. If one arrow was not enough. He would turn the zombie into an undead porcupine as well.

To his surprise and delight. The battle all around was rapping up. It took them some time to arrive but the grand fight. This fight was over in less than a minute. A minute and thirty seconds at the most, as long as Kota felt generous with the time. Kota had to admit that he had thought Asuka was cute but now he was wow. The way he finished off the boss with Guren’s permission was something to admire. Kota did not believe the young man had it in him. He was under the impression the young man was more of a turtle type fighter.

“I never would have guessed you had it in you.” The words were a whisper that could barely escape his lips. He would have no clue if Asuka was able to hear him at all. Kota could hardly see the discomfort on the bloodstained face, he only believed Asuka was upset because of the blood on him. A valid reason as to why anyone would be upset. He was just happy the enemy was dead. That would mean no more people had to be sacrificed to the psychotic people. It would allow the already deceased spirits to move on in peace as well. The act was as much of a kindness as Kota could offer in the moment. The complete eradication of all evil would be too impossible for anyone to complete.

The last words Kota heard from Guren was barely a whisper. He was glad to be able to receive some form of recognition from the battle. It was not the entire life or death experience he felt like he needed. It was close enough as far as he was concerned. This time Kota believed he had some experience when his body started to dissipate. He was not worried that his life was ending and he was dying. This time he welcomed the darkness that enveloped his consciousness. Kota found himself in a familiar dark space. He could not feel his limbs or understand the passage of time. Everything was a blank state like the time before one was born. In a way Kota was experiencing a new rebirth.

The experience before was ending in a similar way. It started with a light that was far away, Kota began being able to feel his fingers, even without being able to see them. The sensation travelled to his limbs, as the light grew lighter. When it became a blinding blur was when he was able to open his eyes. He found himself hanging off of his bed. Kota had a mouth caked with drool at the edges. The early morning sun bringing the bright light. Giving everything that happened before a dream like haze. A haze that frayed the edges of the dream obscuring some details. “That was cool.”
