[Solo] Reconstruction

The book sat idly on the table before her, spine bent and pages flayed from side to side. The words were small and compact to preserve precious parchment; this text must have been made before Kirigakure's technological revolution, so to speak. Paper back then was valuable and preserved. She traced her finger down the edge of one rough page with nary a sound. Most of the Yamanaka clan jutsu have been lost to the ages- currently, she was reading up on yin and yang chakra theory. Something something disconnect between mental and physical bodies, yadda yadda. She wasn't that good at ninjutsu or any derivatives yet, but she liked to think she was halfway decent when it came to sensory. Maybe she should try looking at that first...?
A hefty sigh left her lips, in perhaps the first sound she has made since entering the academy's library. Well... The part she was permitted access to, anyway. She'd get this down eventually, and then perhaps expand on it later. The Yamanaka closed the book after a moment, slipping it into the return pile. Stretching hugely, she stood up from her uncomfortable perch on top of an old fabric chair- likely a remnant of Rin's old academy- and approached the shelves with a cautious eye. Until further notice, she'd probably just work on some more basic techniques to pad out her arsenal. There was no need to jump into the deep end without a solid foundation in the first place, after all.

The days passed with a dreary monotony; with each climbing date, it became more and more difficult to remember when she was. Books upon books upon books had been thoroughly read and cataloged, before being promptly returned to the librarian. She vaguely remembered that she was here to learn about sensory techniques and ninjutsu- however, after a while... A heavy sigh wrought past her lips. There had to be more. There had to be something else she could do. Sitting around all day reading books about something that may or may not even exist anymore in Kirigakure no Sato wasn't the most productive use of her time. The page was clenched carefully between her fingers, using the Surface Walking technique to keep it sticking without her tearing the delicate parchment.
Eventually, however, she sighed heavily, closing the tome delicately even as a small plume of dust flew out. A small puff of air, and she stood up. Momochi Yamanaka picked up this tome along with a few others before making her way back to the librarian's desk, sliding each one she had on her into the book return. No need to make life harder on the school teachers, after all. They already had to deal with too many miniaturized murder gremlins as it was, and she had no desire to contribute to that number. Plus... Who knows? Maybe they'd return the favor some day. There was no telling when she might need the help of a senior archivist, after all.

This morning, Momochi was not in the archives alone. Accompanying her was Inochi- the current clan heir- who had heard of her exploits (or lack thereof) and apparently decided that whatever she was doing was actually of great interest. "It's important that we manage to recreate these jutsu," he spoke simply, "even if we cannot get them as they were. They are symbolic and traditional if nothing else." she, obviously, had nothing to say to such remarks. She was curled up in her favorite corner, back facing a heavy wall, while her distant cousin rifled through numerous shelves of books and scrolls, humming to himself as he went. She scratched her nose, returning to her text. She managed to figure out that if this was to be successful, they might have to branch into other specialties than ninjutsu- primarily the clan's affinity for sensor types, and perhaps medical jutsu if they wanted to dig deeper.
She expressed as much to the other Yamanaka next to her, who simply nodded seriously as if she had said something monumental. "That makes sense, I suppose." she really didn't think it did, but who was she to argue? "So far, all we have is the Mind Body Transmission, which does require an affinity for chakra sensory. Hm..." at this, he stood up, stretching. "We've been here for a while. Maybe we should head back to the compound."
It had only been a few hours, but she was getting frustrated as well. She supposed she could listen just this once.

A deep set frustration gnawed at her bones, demanding her attention with each racing thought. In order to properly recover some of the Yamanaka secret jutsu, it was obvious that her clan needed to start contributing funds more seriously to research and development. That was the crux of the problem; they were largely civilians and retired ninja, and thus the concept of training new fighters was not a priority. She could not force people to take up arms- that would drive a rift between the family sharper and fiercer than the eruption ever could. Fostering new members was not a priority, either. For better or for worse, the Yamanaka were a minority in Kirigakure no Sato, much less the world as a whole. On a continent where recessive bloodlines such as wood release and the sharingan seemed to run rampant in every run of the mill shinobi, a group of infiltrators bearing techniques that could be grabbed at a moment's thought were relatively low on the rung.
She inhaled heavily, feeling her lungs swell with hot, humid air, before letting out a harsh exhale. There was technically one way to encourage more ninja. The current head of the Yamanaka was a civilian, and furthermore was old. If she were to present herself as a viable candidate for succession... Momochi scratched her wrist idly. Inochi was technically clan heir and a ninja one at that. The two of them might be able to work something out. They had to, or their traditions would die out.
