Science was disturbingly like religion, Kozai had come to realize. For a study so reliant on quantifying and explaining as much as possible, it sure took a lot for granted. Whenever a physicist performed research, she surely didn't need to derive the basic laws of the science from the beginning. You had to have faith that the rules that held the universe together worked all the time under normal circumstances, and proceed from there. So, after a fashion, the empiricism that Kozai valued so much was, in the end, based on faith as well. Except that unlike religion, Kozai thought to himself as he headed into the backrooms of the library, science sought the answers to things rather than simply leaving them alone. It was more about the capabilities of the human mind than the mere presumption that a divine force would take care of things on its own. While religion relegated its devils to a fearful place where no soul should want to go, Kozai's line of thinking split atoms and found the devil within, chaining him to humanity's will. In the end, he supposed, it was a matter of usefulness and practicality, just like he wanted it to be.
Kozai pulled down a map and a couple of books from the shelf. Just one of his little side projects, closer to a hobby than anything else. Rolling out the map, he pulled out a couple of inks and various other materials, and began beatifying the map. Prior to his arrival and the creation of the Archives, the Church had been the one responsible for the beatification of text and such. However, with his knowledge and expertise (and especially his materials and equipment) he had already outclassed the Church's methods and speed. Though they didn't know yet, when he released these works to the world, he would render the religious institution's main source of pride and income obsolete utterly. He smirked as he removed his brush and began applying gold leaf around the edge. Those clerical fuckers wouldn't know what was going on until it was far, far too late for them. All he needed to do was put together a couple of machines and keep working on technique in the meantime. There was nothing he couldn't be the best at if he really put his mind to it. Furthermore, these hobbies were... ultimately kind of relaxing, to be quite honest.
The map he was currently working on was one he had actually made from scratch a while ago. In this particular instance, it was the one he had used to correct his research for Akihana when she had wanted to find some kind of water source somewhere outside of the village, ostensibly anyway. More likely than not, she had some other goal in mind, given the specificity of the information she had given him, but that was none of his business. He'd helped her, and had shortly after succumbed to the final wave of his illness. Luckily, he'd outsmarted fate in the end. Now that his eyes could perceive the future, he could break destiny and reshape it as he pleased. All it required was a great deal of effort and patience on his part. However, wasn't that was his life was all about? With an endless lifespan, all he needed to do was measure his worth by how much hard work and determination he was able to put into his projects. Apathy and complacence would be the death of him if he allowed them to take hold, as he almost had in the jungle outside Amegakure. Never again.
He'd lost track of everything in that accursed place. Once, he had looked back on that time as a time of peace, internally. However, he had since regained control of his faculties and reaffirmed his commitment to success rather than mere ephemeral sentiment. If he ever visited that place again, it would be to burn it to the ground, probably. There was no point in continuing to run away from his problems, and certainly no advantage in allowing his goals to become secondary. Kozai was little without his conviction and determination, after all. Realistically, he was just a med nin from Iwa, but with his ambition and thirst for knowledge, he had become so much more. He finished up with the portion of the map that he'd allotted for the day and began cleaning up his work area. He was reminded of a time (it felt another lifetime now) where he wouldn't have bothered with organization and other onerous things. Now, however, he simply couldn't do without it. Maintaining order and discipline just sort of came naturally to him now, and though he was a flexible person, the rigidity of this sort of behavior always seemed to work out well for him now.
Kozai left the library and locked it up for the day. It was time to get another piece of the plan in position. He needed to locate Princess Tehniyat, but without alerting any of the other high ranking shinobi in the area. So, a low powered jutsu would be required, and utilized on someone who knew where she was. In that case, it was time to seek out someone in the council. In the worst possible future, he would have to ask one of the shinobi where she had gone, and that was an outcome that he truly wanted to avoid. If they figured out what he was trying to do, they would most likely stop him. To that effect, he needed to remain covert. This technically wasn't treasonous or criminal in any way. After a fashion, he was just helping the government follow a succession of sorts. Just as plants of diverse kinds grew up after a glacier's passing, so too would Kozai restore order after an event of civil unrest, the details of which he did not know as of yet. Maybe this Namikaze woman that the kage had mentioned would be able to tell him all about it when he met her.
A few minutes later, Councilman Locke was striding down a hallway, content with his new medical funding bill. He entered his room, and locked the door. A few minutes later, the coffee machine was bubbling and Locke was getting ready to relax at home. He turned, and froze when he saw the two red eyes reflected in his window.
"Stop, and obey." Locke's form went a little slack, and he took a seat numbly. Kozai began examining the man's memories, pouring through days and weeks of pointless information. Apparently, the man had several investments related to the hospitals. Kozai would give these some thoughts later, as these could no doubt also be turned to his will. At last, he found what he wanted. It seemed that after some disturbance that he didn't know a lot about either, the Princess had been relocated to Bear Country. Excellent. It seemed that Kozai would be taking a vacation sometime soon. No doubt that kage would want to know where he was going, so he'd have to think up a good pretext to get to Bear Country, but he was also sure he could devise a way to transport there instantly.
"Forget and sleep." He would use his sharingan to wipe Locke's memories of the conversation, and leave undetected. The pieces were on the board, and the dice were in hand. All that he needed to do now was to roll them and play a perfect game.
