Here sat a simple beginner in a room that he knew all too well. Countless hours of his life spent hunched over random books and different chemicals, trying to learn the basics of medicine. For the time being though Vincent was finally alone, nobody standing over his shoulder and correcting his mistakes. A fairly new experience to say the least, Vincent had not had this entire study to himself with permission before. Usually it was a result of him sneaking in for one reason or another. There was also those few times that he broke in due to some kind of desperate situation. Every single instance of this came with some rather brutal punishment once he was found out. Vincent's father was a meticulous man, likely to discover almost anything out of place the moment he walked in. All it would take is one text book ordered wrong, a tool not cleaned properly and the sword of damocles would drop down without hesitation. Today however he had not just permission but he was encouraged! What a day to be alive and now that he was here with a permit to take the room apart and really inspect it he was overwhelmed. What a chance this was to reach for all the things he could not touch, would not dare to touch on a normal day. An opportunity to lose himself in a wealth of knowledge that until this day has been far out of his reach. He was like someone he suddenly found themselves inside of an enchanted forest, surrounded by wonders that he could spend an entire lifetime learning about. Alas life would not be so kind to him, this time. He was here for a purpose and before long he would be asked to show his progress. If whatever he presented wasn't considered acceptable, he would probably never be in here again. Problem of course was that he had absolutely no way to know what would be considered appropriate until he was judged. He knew he would be gauged by a harsh standard, but there was still a high level of anxiety brought about by not knowing precisely what criteria had to be met in order to equal a pass. Well in that case there was no choice but to get to work immediately. First thing was first, cleaning up his work station ensuring that it was sanitized. Sure in the field there was a good chance he would never have a sterile environment, however that was no excuse to get sloppy in at training session. In front of him was a metal table, about two feet wide and as long as he was tall. Kept in pristine condition to be used at the drop of a hat, one could easily see their reflection in the sleek metal. Still Vincent went through the motions of obtaining antiseptic from a nearby cabinet and applying it across the entire table. Using a sterile cloth he carefully scrubbed the table from end to end, ensuring what little dust may have accrued on it in the short time between uses was cleaned away. To his great disdain during his work a few kikkaichu found their way wandering near the table, leading to a very aggravated Aburame shooing them back into his body and taking care to ensure the order to sit still flowed throughout the entire colony. With that he then had to rub down the table for a second time because of god damn course some insect that came from inside of his body was by no means sterile. This time however admittedly there was not nearly as much care put into the process. God forbid something happened that caused him to have to do it a third time Vincent might have just lost his god damn mind. With step one of the writing process finally complete now he had to get all of the materials that he planned to use. Of course this meant sterilizing them before they came anywhere near the table. The absolute last thing that was needed here would be a need to disinfect the table for a third time just because the young fool had become careless. A tray to hold the unfortunate specimen that would be used for today's training, various rags too wipe away the blood and allow him too see what was necessary. Gloves so that he would not contaminate his "patient" nor get viscera on his person and last but not least a scalpel to make the necessary cuts. This time decontamination went off without much of an issue, this really just consisted of leaving all of the materials except the gloves in a bath of antiseptic for a few minutes. Until he could be certain that no more bacteria could possibly be alive within the solution that they were left in. Once that was complete, Vincent put on the gloves collected and dried everything that he had previously removed from their designated spots and placed them on the table for use. There was no reason to be careful with his work here aside from maybe worrying about scratching the table with the knife. However even that was really just a paranoid idea, the scalpel was likely to be damaged long before the table could possibly be. Once said task was completed, Vincent walked over and removed a rather large salmon from it's nearby solitary fish tank. The poor thing had been procured specifically for this, and over the past few days found itself interred within this tank. Now as it was exposed to the air the fish seemed to begin to flop involuntarily within Vincents hands. It must have known what was coming too it, because the fish nearly wriggled its way out of his grip. Luckily it failed at this endeavor in the end, and was successfully transferred to the waiting tray and sedated to prevent any more potential mishaps. The close call eroded what little sympathy that has formed for the little thing however. This may sound like some callous evil thought process but if the salmon had actually managed to find itself rolling around on the floor, that would have been the single worst outcome imaginable. The thought actually managed to make the young medical trainee shudder as he imagined having to struggle to collect his new patient off of the ground. Then the slow, horrific and tedious process of disinfecting the floor of the entire room inch by excruciating inch. Imagining the smell of chemicals and the hours of work it would take to get that done made it so that he was truly hell bent on enjoying what came next. Taking position at the head of table, Vincent picked up the scalpel and with a deep inhale began to make an incision lengthwise of the fish. The gut exposed some of its guts and caused blood to spill out if its body, though contained within the tray holding the fish. Taking some of the nearby cloths, vincent carefully wiped away the blood from the live fish and for just a moment there was a pang of sympathy as he saw it try to wriggle. However the anesthetic he gave it prevented it from mustering enough force to make any kind of significant movement. With a few more careful incisions the salmon was now steadily dying, slow enough that he would have ample time to attempt to save it. However he did have to move with something resembling urgency or it would die. The entire time carefully recording his progress and attempts in a nearby logbook. Carefully...while he was working, meaning that unless he wanted to have to disinfect his hands every time he wrote something. The reality of the situation was that he was expected to keep all of this information in his head, then once he was done it was expected to put his notes together with accuracy. Stopping himself just before making that mistake, Vincent immediately began to remove his gloves and perform the necessary handseals to attempt the jutsu. The idea sounded oh so very simple but in reality was probably one of the more difficult things possible. He was going to have to try and repair all of the damage he just did to the fish before it's life expired. The first step was quite frankly the easy part, determining what was wrong with the fish before it finally died. A simple task only because he was the one responsible for doing all of the damage in the first place. A simple prod here and there, moving some some skin around and he had confirmation of information that was already in his possession. Truth is attempting the mystic palm jutsu that he was hoping to use here was for the moment out of his realm of possibility. However the point here was to learn how to stabilize a patient in a situation where he had only minutes to work, and now it was time to get to work. Slowly, Vincent took several small tools and worked his way through the innards of the fish. Using a textbook spread out in front of him he attempted to identify all the vital organs within the fish that he may have damaged. The first order of business would be to try his best to fix that internal damage. Once he completed that he could possibly get around to stitching up the scales and hopefully have this thing swimming in it's tank before his father came in to check on his. One thing of course that caught him off guard was the smell. He expected for there to be so many chemicals sitting around in this room, so that it would be the only thing he could smell in here. This was an incredibly wrong assumption and he realized before long it just melded with the scent of fish guts and the smell was by no means pleasant. The mask was working to dampen the scent but for some reason it was causing his eyes to burn quite a bit so there was a bit of extra incentive to finish this up. Slowly with the most careful of sutures, Vincent did what ever little work he needed to try and fix the internal damage he caused. Swapping his attention between the book and the fish he replicated the meticulous care that was witnessed when his father worked on anything else. He lost track of time, in all honestly he wasn't even bothering to keep track of time. The amount of time this took him didn't matter so long as his patient was alive when he was done. If it was, then great if it wasn't then he needed to move faster regardless of how much time it took him. After what felt like hours the final stitch went in and the cuts he opened were finally closed. The goal was to finish this before it either suffocated from being out o the water or bled to death from his cuts. A rigged test that was probably impossible without better equipment of techniques, in his eyes, but one he was forced to do non the less. An exasperated sigh was the only sound in the room as he began to clean up, moving the dead fish to be disposed in addition to wiping away the viscera and the blood. After yet another round of deep cleaning to ensure that nothing in the room was contaminated, there came the true test. With the care of an expert, Vincent recorded all of his findings and actions throughout the test today. What did he do wrong, no sense in worrying about the cuts, the point was that it was random. The problem lay in how he failed to act quick enough, how he messed up something else. Was it when he was working around in it's organs? Had he taken too long and the salmon bled out or suffocated? For some reason it was required of him to make sure he had diagrams of what he saw. Ones that he more or less just copied from the book he was looking through. Of course a little bit of flare was added to make it seem like he thought them up himself. How much trouble could there possibly be for this, every salmon more or less looked the same on the inside. If there were any major changes he would have seen it during his mock surgery and to be quite frank. Even if his father wanted to check, the fish would be long gone by then. If that was the case then there was no reason to worry. The best way to figure out where he went wrong for now however was just to get back into the books and study. He needed to have answers for the questions that he was going to be asked. The work was slow, incredibly, slow it required him going through chapters upon chapters of anatomy. The key here was not to focus on the fact that he was literally working on a damn fish out of water. and that was more than likely the reason why it died. Obviously that was the key reason why the fish died, it was inevitable. He would have preferred to use something that could breathe oxygen so that a second time limit wasn't weighing on him the entire time. Yet here he was figuring out this stupid problem as opposed to actually learning something. Well in hindsight he had learned how to ramble incoherently for several hours while working on autopilot. At some unknown point it had managed to become nighttime and it dawned on him. How long had he been sitting here? Going through these books and making these asinine drawings. Why had nobody come to interrupt him in that time, and suddenly the truth of the situation hit him. There was nothing to learn here, it was just just one giant joke. The only thing Vincent was intended to learn here was how to waste his own time. Sure if you really wanted to twist it, there could be some kind of lesson in how to problem solve. How to view the struggles he would face from several angles. Hell you could also consider that maybe he was intended to understand that sometimes a situation was hopeless. and that spending hours agonizing over how poorly everything had went was about as helpful as the failure itself. Instead all he got was a massive headache and an extreme desire to get the hell out of here and not fall for this trap ever again. With a final frustrated sigh of the night, his key example of how absolutely done he was with this entire endeavor, Vincent completed the task of carefully cleaning the room and putting everything back in place. Regardless of how he felt or what happened, the place had to look precisely as he left it or there would be hell to the pay in the end. With some final annoyed stomps he left the room and shut off the lights.
