(I was also told that when I get to Genin I'd be allowed to get my second element. Is that true? If so, does that also mean I can access wood release now?)

Reaching Genin allows you to train your second element, you dont get it for free. Once you've trained it, you can train wood release. Hope that helps. <3

You can train it like you would a jutsu. Make a topic and write about discovering, practicing and perfecting the element. If you do it on your own, you need to complete 4000 words, if someone teaches you, the cost goes down by half. <3
