Congratulating a Friend (P, IO, Senshi, Akihana)
Sat Mar 04, 2017 5:16 pm
Max and Napa had been walking around Kumo, a big grin on the youth’s face as he left his shack. He had on his new, clean white shirt that he had found and he got it extra clean for the occasion. Wandering around the village was something pretty standard of the boy, but this time he had been on a mission. He had heard from Komori that Senshi had become a Chuunin while Max was in the hospital. This was a cause for celebration, and that is of course what Max had come to expect on his way to Senshi’s house. Plus, the boy had to thank Senshi again for the materials that he had given him. They were integral to his new arm being made properly.
Many folks had been in a strange mood. Some people wore a sad, defeated face. The declarations of Maku meant that lady Akihana had failed to convert Kumogakure to a truly peaceful place. Others had been carrying themselves in such a way as to almost “gloat” about the orders. In a sense, those that supported the Raikage’s war like mindset had just won.
With such an event happening, Max would easily understand that there were likely going to be some clans that had recently come out of hiding that decided to return to where they came from. They were probably hoping for a better world for them and their kin under the gentler rule while “The Flower of Kumogakure” had been present. Alas, she had left, and with her a lot of the common people’s hopes and dreams for the future.
Her departure had saddened Max a bit, not that he would ever tell Napa such. Napa didn’t like Akihana’s kind words and influence over the boy. She made it seem like things could be better, like the world might not have been such a dark, scary place. She stood tall in Kumo, a beacon of light in a dark place…. But now she was gone. The shadows came back over the village, and the monsters came out to play.
And the monsters name was Maku, the man with the devils eyes. He ordered conquest on behalf of Mortarion, and only reinforces Napa’s beliefs that the strong rule over the weak. While there were many kinds of strengths in the world as Akihana had claimed, it was apparent to him what kind of strength would be needed now….
Shaking such negative thoughts from his mind, he would look down at the slip of paper with Senshi’s address on it and make sure that he had been going in the right direction. Despite their friendship and being teammates, Max hadn’t ever really been to Senshi’s house. Well, it was about time that he had. Plus, if Max remembered correctly Senshi had offered him a meal a while back. Since he had his experience with that red-eyed fiend, Max had been trying to change how he lived. He began the Chuunin Exams, started hanging out with people other than just his teammates and Napa.
*KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK*
Max would gentle tap on the door in hopes that he had been at the right place.

Senshi was sitting in his study looking over several reports. He had just finished a recent series of missions and leading patrols around Kumo, but with the new war declarations he found himself drawing up plans for trainings entire divisions of shinobi instead of training or resting himself. He was currently looking over some plans he was drafting to run a series of exercises in order to better prepare for the war front. With a long weary sigh he sat black placing the plans back on his desk and tiredly rubbing his eyes. He hasn't gotten any sleep in the past thirty six hours and it was starting to wear on the now twenty two year old Man. Pushing himself up from his desk he walked out of the study, stopping briefly by the bathroom to toss the towel he had wrapped around his shoulders into the laundry basket he kept there. Wandering from his bath room to the kitchen he absent minded let scrated st his bare chested left shoulder.
Occasionally the burn wounds he had received from Maku, who had once been an enemy but was oddly now the General of all of Kumos forces. Senshi sighed again at that thought the familiar burning hot anger resurfacing as he thought of Maku. The man who had systematically slaughtered dozens of Kumo Nin, burned him alive, tortured Itami and Reizo, and the greatest sin of all; chopping off his best friends arm and leg. Senshi slid the coffee pot into its place and turned it on. If he was going to focus on drafting these plans then he would need to give himself some artificial energy. It was as he was doing this that he heard the knock on his door. Raising a confused eyebrow, considering he wasn't expecting anyone, he turned to walk over to the door. He was hoping that he wasn't being called for another mission or patrol so soon. The way the village was critically short on Jounin left Senshi believing that they shouldn't be heading to war just yet. Then again no one had consulted him on that point and he was expected to follow all orders, regardless if he believed in them or not.
Reaching the door he slid the lock and opened it surprised to see his crippled teammate on the other side. He had only had a brief time with the other boy since they had gotten back from the mission. To Max, Senshi would be a six foot seven ridiculously muscled man. He was wearing only a pair of soft looking dark gray pants so his chest was bare for the world to see. Max would get to see the gruesome
Looking burn scars the covered the entire lower part of his torso and climbed up wrapping around the left ribs and covering his entire left pectoral before climbing up over his collar bone and the entire left side of neck and face. Though the neatly trimmed beard he had grown would cover a small portion of his facial burns it was easy to see his cheek and part of his forehead were severely burned as well. Not the mention the large scar cutting from Just above his right eye slashing down diagonally across his nose and down into his left cheek.
All those were curiously of Maku, the other random cuts, stabs, and such were from simple training he had endured. His left shoulder also bore signs of significant lightning damage the bright blue and purple spiderweb of marks standing out sharply to contrast the burned skin. "Good afternoon, Max it is good to see you out of the hospital. Uhm I'll need a small bit of your blood to let you in. I've placed a chakra barrier to better protect my home." Senshi would reach down pulling a small knife out of his pocket. He never went anywhere without at least some kind of weapon on his person. Handing it to Max he continued speaking, "Just a small knick and you can hand the knife back and I'll key you into the barrier." Senshi would wait for max to hand the knife back with blood on it. Once he did he would lean over slightly smearing the blood over the seal tag he had placed best to the door.
Once he had done so he would step back to allow Max room to walk into his home, speaking as he did so. "Please come in." As Max walked into his home he would see a small rack for shoes right next to the door. To his right he would see a comfortable looking couch with a small coffee table in front of it. In the left corner of the right side of the room he would See a small manikin with a Jounin vest hanging on it. Next to the manikin was Senshi's large sword, Gureto. His weapons pouches were also hanging off the manikin. On the coffee table was an array of shuriken, kunai, and his trade mark tantos that he always wore. With them were sharpening stones and oil making it look as though Senshi had been recently performing weapons maintenxe. On the left Max would see a small kitchen with a stove, fridge, sink, and a small bit of counter space with the coffee pot just starting to brew his coffee. A small table with four chairs was set into the corner. Directly in front of him was the hallway with three doors, only the door on the right would be opening, though Max likely wouldn't be able to see into it very well.
"How can I help you Max?" Senshi would motion Max towards the table or the couch speaking again as he did so. "I'm making coffee but I have tea, milk, orange juice, and water if you'd like a drink?" Senshi sounded slightly awkward this was the first time he had really been able to have someone in his home. Komori had stopped by once before but it had been a short visit. From the hallway Max would hear lift talking as though Senshi had someone else in the apartment. A short moment later the bedroom door would open and two flamingo's would come flying down the hallway. One only a half inch tall. They would each land on opposite sides of shoulder and were cawing at each other before the half inch tall one, the one that had landed on his left shoulder would move closer to Senshi's neck so that he was pressed against it hard. "Senshi! He's being mean again!" Senshi would offer a slight sigh before looking at Max and ignoring the flamingos for the moment.

Re: Congratulating a Friend (P, IO, Senshi, Akihana)

Max would see the titan of a man standing before him. Senshi looks like he must have hit a growth spurt it seems. It was a bit odd, seeing Senshi had grown so much. Of course, Max had been in the hospital recovering for some time. He didn’t think it had been that long, but he didn’t know how long he had been out before he woke up. He didn’t feel like he had aged that much, but it could very well be possible that the medical chakra’s used to stabilize the boy and mend his wounds helped stop his body from aging during his time under.
There were burns all over Senshi’s bare body, and some even on his face. Max knew that Senshi had normally pushed himself to the brink, but that seemed like overkill even for Senshi. Max would try not to stare, but at the same time he wondered just what happened to his comrade and friend. “Senshi, what happened?” Max would ask this with sincere worry in his voice. He didn’t like the thoughts of his friends being hurt, even if it had normally been self inflicted.
Blood? That would be easy enough for the boy to get for Senshi. Being a Chuunin really must be dangerous work. Senshi had some serious defenses in his home, despite it being in Kumogakure. Senshi must not have felt fully at ease here. It was difficult to feel one hudred percent secure here. In a moment’s notice there can be a pounding at your door, the men in power calling you a traitor to the cause. Max had watched it countless times before…
Running the razor sharp blade of Senshi across his finger, the boy would immediately focus his chakra into the basic medical technique he had learned with Senshi. It felt like it had been an eternity since that time. So much had happened since then.
“Added security? Dangerous life of a Chuunin, eh?” Max would ask as Senshi welcomed him into the home. It seemed like a nice place. Didn’t feel like it had necessities, like a worktable to work on contraptions and puppets, but then again Senshi didn’t really need those things. The place had been a bit more spacious than the home of Max, or maybe it just seemed like it. Max had a tendency to… collect things. Most of the time, if the boy thinks he found something that he could fiddle with and come up with ideas for new creations, he would pick it up and store it in his home. Because of this fact, the boy didn’t have that much space besides around his worktable and bedding.
Seeing the shoe rack, Max realize the polite thing to do would be remove his shoes and so he did before heading any farther inside. “Napa, I’m going to set you down right here, okay. You’ll still be able to hear what is going on.” He says to his puppet pal before setting him next to the shoe rack. Noticing the Jounin vest hanging from the lifeless “puppet” in the left corner of the room, Max would start to think about what that meant. It could always belong to another member of the Kobayashi Clan, but then again Max couldn’t see the Chuunin Vest anywhere around. Maybe it was in Senshi’s room.
“I’ll gladly take some tea, if you would be so kind.” Max would say as he followed Senshi’s que to sit at on the comfy looking couch. “I’m sorry to come over unannounced. I thought it would be a pleasant surprise for you. I heard that you made Chuunin from the twins, and since I was in the hospital when you got the promotion, I figured I’d come and congratulate you!” The boy had a wide smile on his kind face. There was an innocence to it, but at the same time Senshi knew that the boy wasn’t completely like other children his age.
The boy wanted to ask how Senshi felt about the news of Kumo's military advances into the neighboring kingdoms, but Senshi looked to be a bit worn out and had likely been doing much more than Max had because of Senshi's now elevated Chuunin status.
Hearing the voices from the other room, Max was about to ask if this had been a bad time before two colorful flamingo’s flew from the room and seemed to nuzzle into the neck of Senshi.
“Oh wow! Who might these guys be?” Max says, curious about the ninja summons of Senshi. They were little, and seemed to be full of life. There was some sort of dispute among them, and it looks as though they look to Senshi to settle it.

Re: Congratulating a Friend (P, IO, Senshi, Akihana)

As max asked him what had happened Senshi stared back a confused look on his face for several seconds. He was very unsure what Max was referring to but then he followed the boys gaze to his chest. Looking down at his chest and back at Max several times he realized that Max must be talking about his burn wounds. With a half shrug he responded, his voice slightly carefree but anger lurking underneath it all. "You lost an arm and a leg to Maku, the missing Nin we founght. This is what he did to me while you were unconscious." Senshi gave another half shrug as though to say what could you really do about it. The medics had offered to attempt more skin grafts and use medical chakra to heal the burn scars but Senshi had been uninterested. It would have put him up in the hospital for a lot longer than he was comfortable with. At the same time he didn't care if he was attractive or gruesome looking. Aesthetics really didn't matter to him.
Senshi shrugged awkwardly at Max's word, he knew that news of his recent promotion to Jounin wasn't large news. He didn't feel like correcting Max just yet either so he simply responded to his words. "It can be. I prefer to be secure just in case, especially after that mission." Senshi was a simple person the only room in the house that was truly decorated was his study. Even then it wasn't decorated because Senshi wanted it to be, but because he needed a good work place. Plus his one true enjoyment beyond training was books and reading. The only other time he could relax was when he was performing the menial task of weapons maintenance. As such he needed a room dedicated to that. With the added work that reports added to his time as a Chuunin and even more so as a Jounin adding in the desk had been a requirement. He rarely had people over but when he did it was usually only to go over report details with them so they sat in the study.
A place he would be taking Max to before he left, seeing as he recalled he had a letter for the boy. His Study was the safest place in the house after all and with these letters he felt the additional security was needed. As Max set Napa down Senshi gave the puppet a polite nod, "Forgive me Napa I was distracted, Good afternoon as well." Senshi kicked himself for his slight i attention in not greeting his teammates creation and friend. He really must be tired from the patrols and paper work for that to happen. At Max's request Senshi nodded moving into the kitchen and grabbing a tea pot from a cabinet. As he opened it Max would see the obsessive order he kept in his hope. All the plates, bowls, and cups in the cabinet were perfectly aligned and stacked. He quickly filled the tea pot with water and placed it on the stove to heat up.
Senshi moved back towards the living room as they waited for the tea to boil, and as he did so that was when the Flamingo younglings came out of the bedroom. Senshi gave a half tired sigh at their bi keeping choosing to respond to Max in reverse order. "The smallest one is Kyoki, he was on the mission with us. He went and got reinforcements while he delayed Maku." The little bird puffed up fluffing his feathers as he did so. "This other little guy is Hijoshikina, another of my Flamingo Summons. They like to hang out here rather than in the Black Forest when they can." Senshi gave another shrug but this time it was clear how careful he was being with t so the two small birds weren't dislodged. "Hijoshikina, don't be rude or I'll place you in time out. Kyoki saved my life after all so you owe him some respect." The small flamingo lowered its head mumbling before offering an apology to Kyoki.
With that handled Senshi focused back in on Max, it was apparently the time to inform him. "Thank you but, I actually just received another promotion as well. To Jounin. You're the first of the group I've had a chance to inform since the resent war setting has increased the work loads all around." Senshi didn't bother shrugging this time as his voice lost any inflection turning emotionless for a moment. He remembered his orders, the ones that would force him to kill the blonde boy before him. With a slight twitch of his muscles he turned just as the tea kettle started to whistle. He quietly performed the usual tasks of pulling down two cups. He quickly filled his with coffee before also grabbing the coffee pot. With all these items in tow he motioned with his head towards his study. "Actually Max, if you'll follow
Me to my study I have something for you."
Senshi would then walk towards the study, Hijoshikina would dart off his shoulder pushing the door fully open for him. Walking in he gently placed the tea and Max's cup down on the small table. When Max walked in he would be treated with the sight of dark red wood flooring, a dark redwood desk, and an entire wall of dark red wood book cases stuffed to the brim with books. In front of the desk were two comfortable looking red chairs and a small table in between them. Senshi placed his coffee cup down before walking behind his desk and rifling through it to pull out two envelopes. He walked back and took his seat placing the envelopes on his knee as he took a drink from his coffee cup. This would require some explanation so he waited for Max to join him and sit down. He would carefully pour the boy some tea and offer him the cup before sitting back taking a moment to think.

He walked back and took his seat placing the envelopes on his knee as he took a drink from his coffee cup. This would require some explanation so he waited for Max to join him and sit down. He would carefully pour the boy some tea and offer him the cup before sitting back taking a moment to think.

Re: Congratulating a Friend (P, IO, Senshi, Akihana)

Upon hearing Senshi’s explanation of what had happened, it only caused the boys anger to swell. It looked as though nobody on his team escaped that battle unscathed. This man, the man that had permanently scarred and maimed his team… The boy’s displeasure at the thought of Maku had been quite apparent. His face wouldn’t show it, but his eyes would. Of course, Max wouldn’t say anything out loud about his displeasure. He didn’t want to say anything that could get Senshi in any trouble, either from the Raikage himself of his newly appointed general.
“Oh, so you saved us all Kyoki! If it hadn’t been for you, we might be in much worse shape right now. Who knows, we might not even be here if not for you! Thanks!” Max would say graciously to the small bird. “Hijoshikina, you should treat such a hero with respect, don’t you think?” Max would tease, trying to be friendly to the Flamingos. Of course, one more set of thanks needed to be put out there in regards to that mission. "The medics said that I was lucky not to have bled to death when I lost my arm and leg. With our other teammates passed out, I'm under the impression that you were the one to wrap me up. Thank you, Senshi. I owe you my life."
Senshi’s house had been surprisingly neat, everything proper and in its place. The boy kept his work space neat, but Senshi’s whole house had been neater than Max had ever been. Max figured that Senshi would be very orderly though. Everything about Senshi had been very much like this. Rigid structure had worked well for the man before him, though that wouldn’t likely be the case for Max. The controlled chaos that was his home was key to inspiring his creations and works.
Then Senshi had dropped the news on him. “You were promoted to Jounin?” the boy would ask, surprised by it. “That places you at the same rank as Commander Itami. They must really have a lot of faith in you to grant you a promotion so quickly. You do a lot of good around the village, and they must have finally recognized it. Congratulations on your new rank.” Max would wonder if the rank up had anything to do with the recent events and upcoming war, not that his thoughts would discredit Senshi’s accomplishments.
Hearing the whistle of the teapot, Max would know that the tea had been ready. It seemed that Senshi had needed Max in the next room, so the boy would get up and head over to follow his friend. He would walk in, and take a seat at the table. Pouring some tea, Max would then blow on it and sip the beverage while Senshi was grabbing the envelopes.
Upon receiving it, Max would ask the first thing that had come to mind.
“What are these?”

Senshi’s own reaction to Maku’s sudden placement as the General of Kumogakure’s forces had been… violent. Something he had worked out himself in the training grounds, especially considering the orders he had been given upon his promotion to Jounin. It was just not something that he could get behind. The Raikage was his leader, and as such Senshi owned him fealty and loyalty. However, Kumogakure was what he was meant to support and build up. To trust in his village. His Chuunin examiners had even made note of how overly loyal he was and commented on how he needed to focus more on the village as a whole rather than a single person.
Senshi had not understood at the time, in fact he hadn’t understood until he had seen Maku above him, issuing orders. After he had already killed dozens of Kumo shinobi, and maimed others, for what seemed like simple fun. Kyoki fluffed up in pride at Max’s words going so far to lean around Senshi’s neck and stick his tongue out at the more experienced Hijoshikina. Before the two could start another argument Senshi rolled his shoulders forcing them to dig their tiny feet claws into his shoulder in order to hold on. Though they pierced his skin lightly he barely felt it, ignoring the slight wetness of small bits of blood pulling around the tiny puncture marks.
It wasn’t a lot of blood, so Senshi wasn’t focused on needing to clean it up right now. He had other issues on his mind. Senshi blushed slightly his tanned features taking on a light red tint at Max’s thanks. “I barely managed to apply a proper tourniquet before I passed out myself. I should have been able to do more, but the pain was to great. I apologize Max, I fear if I had been a more effective teammate we could have saved your arm and leg.” Senshi wanted to apologize more voraciously for his failure, but had learned from his interactions with their other teammate, Reizo, that doing so was not always a good thing. In fact the last time he had apologized to Reizo the boy had seemed offended that he was doing so.
Senshi was, for lack of a better term, OCD when it came to his home. Well when it came to anything. It was the result of years of training, something that he could no longer help doing. When things were disorderly he felt out of sorts and the need to fix it arose viciously in his being. Senshi’s blush would resurface at Max’s congratulations and his commenting on what Senshi did around the village. He honestly did not feel as though he did that much, but he would accept Max’s congratulations. “Thank you Max, However, I merely think it was in preparation for this war. I only do my duty as a shinobi to the village, that means assisting it in any capacity that I can.” Senshi’s embaressment stemmed more from the fact that he was not used to receiving praise for anything that he had done.
Even his family, upon discovering his promotion to Jounin had not congratulated him. It had been more expected that he would attain the rank, despite the fact that he was the first to ever do so. As Senshi handed Max the envelop with his name on it he had paused to gather his thoughts. Max’s question brought him back to reality and he took another drink of his coffee before speaking again. “It is a letter from Akihana-sama.” Senshi paused and when he continued his tone had a hint of anger in it, “All I have found out so far is that she has left us. Lord Raikage warned me to ask no further questions on the issue.” He paused again and let out a long weary sigh, before continuing his voice slightly defeated sounding. “I could not find any information on what has happened since, but no one has seen her in the village for awhile. When Lord Raikage gave me my promotion he also gave me these letters, I figured we could read them together. Maybe… find out what happened to her… if she needs help and what not.”
Senshi finished speaking looking down at the letter remembering the first time he had met Akihana, as his Genin exam proctor. Then again later when he had the botched D rank and she had talk him through the issue and then taught him how to bake some simple things. It had been the single most enjoyable day of his career so far, and he felt betrayed by her sudden disappearance. As though her dedication to the village had all been a lie. His face hardened and he finally unfolded the envelope, hoping that it had at least some answers to what had happened.

"You were an- no, you ARE a wonderful teammate.” The boy corrects himself mid statement, letting Senshi know that despite his rank up and higher position, Max would always consider them friends and teammates. Team Awesome was still his team, despite everything. “There was nothing that we could do to a person like that. He has the eyes of a monster, and anyone with those eyes is someone to be weary of." Max remarks, knowing fully that going any further down that path could of thought could be bad, both for Senshi and himself. Speaking ill of the Kage isn't something that most considered a good idea.
"Plus, it was Napa's fault. He should have gotten there sooner." Max says in a playful tone, hoping to relay to Senshi that despite his wounds, things are okay and no blame is placed on the freshly promoted Jounin. Napa on the other hand would say several choice words to the boy that only he could hear.
“No, I believe you were promoted for your dedication to Kumo. No other person was as adamant at helping the rest of the entire village as you have been. Don’t let this time of war try and cheat you out of a well-deserved promotion.” The boy would think back to all of the things he had seen Senshi do. Not only did the man develop faster than anybody else he had ever seen, but he had also made it a point to teach and train each and every shinobi that he met on his path. Senshi had been someone who had helped Kumogakure as a whole, and brought everyone around him up. If that doesn’t warrant a legitimate promotion, Max doesn’t know what would.
When Max was told about the letters and who they were from, it only cemented it in his mind. The reality of everything came crashing back in. Akihana had left letters, and so she was truly gone. The boy had already known of her departure, had already let those thoughts sink in. This… this made it all too real.
“Thank you, Senshi.” Max would say, wondering what words had been inside. He wondered if these would be the last words he ever got from the First Lady. They were in fact going to war under orders from… well, Mortarion himself in a sense.
Unsealing the letter, the boy would sip his tea and begin to read.

Dear Senshi,
Even as I get ready to depart, I see your chunin paperwork being readied in the Raikage's office. I saw the papers myself upon my last look at the office to ensure I hadn't missed anything and all I wanted was to tell you how proud I am of you. You have come so far in your journey yet I know you'll go further still.
It is not often that we come across a shinobi that will define his generation and I am happy to say I see such a shinobi in you. While your skill at ninjutsu and obedience to authority will no doubt be a valuable asset to Kumogakure, there is something far more valuable you have to give not just to Kumo but to the world at large.
And that invaluable resource is you. I know there are too many voices in the mix sometimes. The Raikage's, your family's, your teammates' and students' and probably mine too albeit slightly muffed. But the most important voice in the cacophony of sounds will always be the one that comes from inside you.
Always listen to that voice, Senshi. Never let it die because in the end, its that voice that defines you, that helps you make the right choices and that brings forth the best in you. That voice might sometimes contradict known facts and authority figures but it is nonetheless worth listening to. Even worth living by.
Yours Truly,
Akihana
Letter 2
My Darling Max,
It pains me to leave Kumogakure without you but my only solace is that I will be back soon and that while I'm gone, you will be taken care of. The future is such an uncertain thing, all the plans we make now can just fade away with a breath. And yet we have to keep trying because if we don't try, then we are nothing in this world.
There were times when I was almost defeated, when I saw no point in trying. These were the times you gave me strength, Max. The thought of you going on made me feel that I too could go on, and all that encouragement has culminated to this day. The Raikage has entrusted me with an important mission, one I could and would not turn down. I only hope that Kumo continues to prosper in my absence as it did when I was here.
That being said, I can't possibly forgive myself if I left you no way to contact me. We are not simply joined by our deep love for Kumogakure but also my love for you. I already have two sons, and where I'm from, they say a third child in the family is lucky. What do you say, would you consent to be my good luck charm?
If you ever need to find me, follow the stars Max. The well guide the way. In my absence, you must now be the light of Kumogakure.
All my love
Akihana

Senshi wanted to shrug max’s comment about him being a wonderful teammate away, but a recent book had told him that doing so was generally bad. It made the person think that their words were unwanted and Senshi did not want Max to think that. As Max continued Senshi’s jaw tightened in anger at the thought of THAT man again. He gave Max a nod that would convey the fact that he agreed with what he was saying. “I will always be a teammate to you Max, regardless if they take me off the team.” Senshi raised a slight eyebrow at Max’s next words, looking over to the puppet to see if he had a response.
But he didn’t hear anything and thus shrugged, if Napa didn’t want to defend himself then that was his own choice. Not something that Senshi could assist in. As Max lavished praise on him Senshi blushed slightly looking down, unsure how to respond exactly. “I just do my duty to the village, nothing special.” His voice was slightly low, his embaressment clear for anyone to see. Senshi merely nodded at Max’s thanks, mostly because he was so absorbed in his own letter from Lady Akihana. He read it through once, and then re-read it much slower the second time around.
His eyes moving through to read the words again and again. Lady Akihana was telling him that his voice and opinions mattered. That if he didn’t agree with something that he should still listen to what he thought. He looked down at his shoes, sipping his coffee absentmindedly. He turned his eyes to Max spending several moments observing the boy quietly. Max was dimunitive compared to him, killing him would be no easy feat, but it was something that he knew he could do. But the reality was, it wasn’t something that he wanted to do.
He did not agree with the fact that the Lord Raikage wanted him to murder the villagers and other shinobi in the event that they were going to lose. Kumogakure could live on, continue to prosper even if they were attacked and lost an invasion. They could go into hiding and take it back if they managed to survive the battle. He grit his teeth in further thought before he looked back at Max, waiting and allowing him ample time to read and go over his message. Finally, Senshi spoke his voice slightly rough. “I…. I have something I need to tell you Max.” Senshi paused looking down at his hands in thought again.
The Raikage had not told him to not share his orders, but the implication had been there. Max, to Senshi, felt like someone that was or could possibly have been a sibling. He didn’t know what it was like to have a younger person who was a blood relative but he imagined it was something similar to how he saw Max. Taking a deep breath when he spoke this time his voice was dead, completely emotionless. “I was given an order upon my promotion. That order, was that in the event of an invasion if it seemed like we were going to lose I am supposed to kill everyone. All villagers and all shinobi.”
Senshi paused turning his hard eyes towards Max, the depths of his ability to carry out this order showing in his face. “However, I can’t… I won’t kill you.” His voice remained hard emotionless, making it clear that he intended to do his duty and follow his orders but that Max himself would be spared. “If I must carry out this order, I want you to flee. Go to Lady Akihana, and come back. You once told me that in the event I fall in battle you would turn me into a puppet for the betterment of the village.” Senshi paused again, his endgame would be clear to Max now. “I will carry out my orders, to include my own death. I want you to return, turn us into those puppets you promised and ensure we can truly defend this village. Can you do that?”
Senshi knew it was a lot to ask, but he had to ask it of the boy. It was a risk he was willing to take, he knew Max had an attachment to others, but Senshi and Max would need to commit the hardest thing they had ever had to do, into this. “You’re welcome to plan an escape, and take those with you who can do it. But I will have to kill anyone who is in the village if it comes to it.” He would offer Max, the one true capitulation he was going to allow. If Max wanted to take some orphans with him, then Senshi would give him that chance, the option that he himself did not have. “I must also ask that you not share this information with anyone else, I’m breaking laws just by telling you.”

Re: Congratulating a Friend (P, IO, Senshi, Akihana)

Max would read the letter, his face lighting up as he read. It had felt almost as if Akihana herself had been there in the room speaking the words to him. As he had finished reading, he read in over and over, making sure that he had read it correctly. After he had finished, he looked up to see if Senshi was done reading as well.
Excitedly, Max would explain the letter to Senshi. “Lady Akihana said that she hopes to be back soon. And better still, I think that she sees me as a son!” Max would begin to tear up, his joy becoming almost too much to keep inside. The happiness he had felt at that very moment would likely be a memory not soon forgotten. It wasn’t every day that an orphan of Kumogakure was adopted, especially not one as… different as he had been. Wiping his tears away, he would look over at Senshi and see only the most solemn of looks.
“What is it, Senshi? Was it bad news?” the boy would wonder, hoping that Senshi didn’t receive some terrible news in his letter.
That was when Senshi explained his orders.
The expression on the face of Max went from a look of sheer happiness to one of confusion. He didn’t really believe what he had heard. Senshi was to… was to…. Kill everyone in the village? No, that couldn’t be. He must have misheard Senshi.
He did make a promise to the man, and Max wasn’t one to go back on his promises. “I really do appreciate you telling me this. I understand what you are risking in doing so. I just…” Max would stop, his happiness rapidly fleeting. “Why would you consider such a thing? Because your Kage asks it of you? How can that possibly be in the best interest of the village? It isn’t an order to better the village! It is an order to be carried out so that he can destroy this village once more, to spite those that would possibly better him.” Max would shake his head, it now hanging low as he spoke.
“Your kage has taken nearly everything from me. He has taken my family, he has taken my village….” The boy would ball up his little fists, his anger now clearly showing though without a doubt, “He brings in that other devil, Maku - the man who had attacked and butchered countless Kumogakure people for nothing more than his own amusement- to lead a war that we cannot win against the world. His- no, Kumo’s people sign up in hopes for a better life than the one they lead here, groveling under the boots of those in power. They are untrained civilians. If we face ANY real opposition, they will die. Not just a few as casualties of war. No, countless civilians will die. And for what? So that your Raikage can claim lands to expand HIS influence. Meanwhile, if we spread what forces we have here thin, we only leave Kumogakure open to attack.” His now balled up fists were trembling, his rage seething within.
“And now he is trying to take the some of the last things I have left right now to cling dearly to. He plans to take the lives of people who are willing to risk everything while fighting a losing battle to defend this village. The village that he will be weakening by sending out and spreading our forces thin.” Max would take several deep breaths, his disposition slowly coming to a calmer one.
Taking a line directly out of the mouth of Akihana, Max would now start to truly understand, “Whenever we engage in war, there is no winner.” Max would say, his tone quiet and more reserved now that he had regained his composure. “Akihana told me something that I don’t ever plan to forget. She said that nobody was always right. Those words hold true for everybody, Senshi. Even the monster that sits as the Raikage.”
Max understood the dilemma that Senshi had been in. What does one choose in that event? Do they follow the orders, knowing that what they were doing was horrible? Or do they ignore those orders, and disobey their kage. Max would look up at Senshi, his eyes showing the pain within.
“I’m a shinobi of my word, so if that is what it comes down to I’ll do as you ask. I made a promise didn’t I? I just hope that you realize the error in the Raikage’s judgements before you do something there is no going back from. I don’t want to lose any of my friends. Not the twins, not Reizo, and especially not you, Senshi. Know that I won’t tell anyone what you just told me, as I know that it would only end badly for you. Hopefully the day you speak of will never come.”
Max would sit there, waiting to hear what Senshi had to say about all of this.
